Xbox Boss Comments on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle Coming to PS5

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of pixel-chasing under my belt, I must say, the gaming industry never ceases to surprise me! The latest news about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle coming to PlayStation 5 next year has left me both thrilled and slightly bewildered.

On Tuesday at Gamescom, Xbox unexpectedly revealed that the upcoming game “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” will be accessible on PlayStation 5 next year. This follows the release of the Xbox and PC versions, so those without a PlayStation can still play Indiana Jones ahead of schedule, but the Spring 2025 launch date for this title isn’t too far from its current December 9th release date. With this news about PlayStation 5 compatibility, Xbox head Phil Spencer has since addressed the multiplatform decision, clarifying comments made earlier in the year that were perceived to mean “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” would never be available on the PlayStation 5.

During an IGN livestream on Gamescom’s opening night following the Opening Night Live event, Spencer was queried about Indiana Jones and the Great Circle potentially launching on the PS5. He responded by stating that, in essence, Xbox is a business much like its corporate parent, Microsoft.

In the context of Microsoft, where the standards are exceptionally high, our company thrives. The support we receive from this giant corporation is truly astounding, enabling us to perform at our best. Consequently, our aim is to strengthen our games and expand our platform – encompassing console, PC, and cloud environments. We believe this approach will yield success for us.

Previously, rumors circulated about an unspecified Xbox game being ported to PS5 before Gamescom, but Indiana Jones and the Great Circle wasn’t a likely candidate given past comments from Spencer. Before the announcement that Sea of Thieves, Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Grounded would be available on various platforms, Spencer had mentioned only four games were going multiplatform while excluding Starfield and the Indiana Jones game. Upon reevaluation of those comments, it appears that Spencer was discussing only the initial four multiplatform games at the time and never explicitly stated that the Indiana Jones game would always be exclusive to Xbox.

As a passionate gamer, looking forward to the PlayStation announcement, I can’t forget the excitement of last spring when we introduced four incredible games. Two of them found their home on the Nintendo Switch, while the other four graced the PlayStation. He emphasized during the Gamescom segment on Tuesday that we were eager to learn and observe. In the spirit of continuous improvement, I believe he hinted at the Xbox Showcase that from our newfound knowledge, we’re ready to do even more.

He continued to say that the health of Xbox and the health of the platform and its games remained Xbox’s top priorities, but in terms of games going multiplatform, Xbox wants to make “better games that more people can play.”
