As a survivor of numerous stormy seas and life-threatening situations, I can only imagine the sheer terror and despair that gripped the passengers of that ill-fated yacht as it sank beneath the waves.
There’s been a heartbreaking update in the Sicily yacht tragedy.
Following a sinking of a luxury yacht off Palermo’s coast during a severe storm on August 19th, divers uncovered two bodies within the debris of the vessel, as per a source informed about the rescue efforts who spoke to NBC News.
The identities of the recovered bodies have not yet been determined, but the discovery comes shortly after the names of the six missing passengers were shared.
Mike Lynch, a well-known tech entrepreneur from Britain, along with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah, Jonathan Bloomer – the Chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and his spouse, Chris Morvillo, an attorney at Clifford Chance, and his wife, have not been located as of now. This information was shared by Salvatore Cocina, the Director of Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency, with NBC News.
As I’ve learned from the source, it was subsequently discovered that the women who were reported missing were indeed my colleagues, Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvillo.
It’s thought that the passengers were trapped within the ship’s lower body, which is still submerged more than 150 feet beneath the water surface. Divers are persistently scouring through the debris, but the immense depth, additional hindrances, and confined passages have made this task quite challenging.
Six people are still missing, but Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, Ricardo Thomas, the ship’s cook, and nine other crew members, along with two additional passengers, have been found in the wreckage of the ship. Eight of those found were taken to a hospital, while the rest were transported to a nearby hotel. Unfortunately, Ricardo Thomas later passed away, according to NBC News.
Among the other rescued passengers, Charlotte Golunski Emsley narrated their family’s harrowing tale of resilience, which involved her husband James Emsley and their one-year-old daughter Sophie. They were suddenly awakened by the storm, possibly a waterborne tornado known as a waterspout according to meteorologists reporting to NBC News.
Golunski referred to their family’s quest for a lifeboat that eventually saved them along with 11 other passengers as “a feeling of an apocalyptic end.”
She reminisced to Italy’s La Repubblica, as reported by the BBC, “Everything was pitch-black. In the water, I could barely hold my eyes open. I cried out for assistance, but all I could discern in the surrounding area were the cries of others.”
