Rotten Tomatoes Introduces a Popcorn Meter for Audience Reviews

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast who has witnessed numerous cinematic battles, heart-wrenching dramas, and action-packed adventures, I am thrilled about the recent innovation by Rotten Tomatoes. The introduction of the “Verified Hot” badge is a game-changer that will significantly enhance my movie-going experience.

Rotten Tomatoes recently unveiled a fresh initiative to authenticate viewer reviews, assigning them a more formal rating. The terms “fresh,” “rotten,” and “certified fresh” will still be used for expert reviews approved by Rotten Tomatoes, but audience scores will adopt popcorn-themed labels. Positive reviews (3.5 stars or higher) will now be labeled as “hot,” while unfavorable reviews (“stale”) represent scores below this threshold. A “Verified Hot” badge will be displayed on movies that receive an audience score of 90% or more on the Popcornmeter, along with other unspecified conditions being met.

The “Verified Hot” badge is a complement to “Certified Fresh,” a designation that says a movie has earned a 75% “fresh” rating or higher from a predetermined number of accredited critics. The first movies to receive the Verified Hot designation on the Popcornmeter include some of the summer’s hottest titles: Deadpool & Wolverine, Twisters, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Fly Me to the Moon, It Ends with Us, and more.

According to Amanda Norvell, SVP of Direct-to-Consumer Services at Fandango, people often turn to the verified audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with the Tomatometer score from critics, when they’re looking for new movies to watch. She is thrilled about the introduction of Rotten Tomatoes Verified Hot, as it allows them to highlight and acknowledge the theatrical films that audiences have widely appreciated and taken the effort to share their exceptional cinema experiences with other movie enthusiasts.

As a dedicated gamer and movie enthusiast, I’m excited to share that Rotten Tomatoes has made their “Popcornmeter” rating system for TV shows and movies more transparent! From today onward, you’ll notice a full, red popcorn bucket marked as “Hot” if 60% or more of the audience rates the title with 3.5 stars or higher. On the flip side, when less than 60% of the audience gives it a 3.5-star rating or higher, you’ll see a green tipped-over popcorn bucket labeled “Stale.” This change will help us all make more informed choices about what to watch!

Confirmed purchases involve individuals who have demonstrated they purchased cinema tickets via Fandango, a popular ticketing service. This measure was implemented to discourage dissatisfied viewers from posting unfavorable reviews about movies or actors they dislike, an issue that has sparked disagreements among audiences and placed Rotten Tomatoes at the center of numerous debates and controversies.
