As a seasoned gamer and wrestling enthusiast who has spent countless hours cheering for Hulk Hogan during his epic matches, I must admit that the news about the biopic being shelved is a major letdown. I’ve been eagerly waiting to witness Chris Hemsworth embody the larger-than-life persona of Hulk Hogan on the big screen, and Todd Phillips’ vision seemed like the perfect fit.
As a die-hard fan, I was eagerly anticipating the Hulk Hogan biopic spearheaded by Todd Phillips and starring Chris Hemsworth. However, in an unexpected turn of events, Phillips himself has confirmed during an interview for his new project Joker: Folie a Deux, that this dream project doesn’t seem to be materializing for him anymore. When asked about the Hulk Hogan biopic, he expressed, “I was passionate about what we were trying to create, but it seems that won’t happen for me.” With Netflix stepping away from the project earlier, it appears the momentum has never fully recovered.
A Fork in the Road
During an interview with Chris Van Vliet on Insight, Hogan explained the current state of the project, mentioning that Netflix’s participation had concluded due to a business misalignment. In his words, “Netflix encountered a delay in their business situation which caused us to part ways.” Realizing this was an opportunity for change, Hogan decided to shift focus, as his life rights are now with another party and exciting developments are on the horizon. Fingers crossed that director Todd Phillips and Chris Hemsworth are still interested, as there’s a significant opportunity left in the project.
Scott Silver penned the script, including that for The Joker and various other films, as Hogan stated. Todd Phillips has been behind The Joker, The Wolf of Wall Street*, and numerous other unconventional projects. Upon reading the revised script, it was impressive because my preferred films include Scarface, The Godfather, True Romance. Suddenly, the script had all the elements I admired. Unfortunately, there was a business issue, which they attempted to resolve a few days later. By then, I had already made up my mind and decided to pursue other opportunities.
A Second Film
That’s not the only Hulk Hogan project currently in development though, as reports have confirmed that Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s Artists Equity Production Company has acquired a screenplay for a film titled Killing Gawker. The project would bring the real life legal battle between Hogan and Gawker Media to theaters, and the script is based on Ryan Holiday’s book about the real life story Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker, and the Anatomy of Intrigue. Charles Randolph, who was nominated for an Oscar for The Big Short, is writing the script, but no word on a possible release date or official casting.
The movie is inspired by the legal battle that took place in 2012, where Hulk Hogan took Gawker Media to court over their publication of a private video from 2006. Hogan filed a lawsuit against Gawker Media for $100 million due to privacy invasion, violation of personality rights, and emotional distress. In 2016, Gawker Media agreed to pay Hogan $31 million. Although it’s uncertain if the Hogan movie will make it to theaters in the end, it appears that this project is moving forward for now.
I’d love to hear your thoughts about the ongoing Hogan project! Feel free to share your wrestling insights with me on Threads @mattaguilarcb!
