As a long-time fan of the Alien franchise, I must say, the recent release of Alien: Romulus has truly rekindled my excitement for this iconic series. The movie’s impressive opening and stellar reviews have left me utterly thrilled, transporting me back to the days when I first watched Ridley Scott’s groundbreaking original.
Over the weekend, the new Alien film, titled Romulus, made a strong start in cinemas nationwide, receiving favorable critiques and exceeding box office predictions. Directed by Fede Alvarez, this installment of the franchise, which returns Alien to its horror foundations, surpassed estimates and grossed over $42 million in US theaters alone. This impressive debut is undeniably a triumph for the franchise and 20th Century, but how does it stack up against Romulus’ predecessors in terms of opening weekend earnings?
Surprisingly enough, the sci-fi horror movie “Alien: Romulus” now holds the distinction of having the second strongest opening among all Alien series films, following closely behind the highly anticipated 2012 release, “Prometheus”. Interestingly, the box office earnings for “Romulus”, amounting to $42 million, are only surpassed by the initial take of “Prometheus” which was a staggering $51 million more than a decade ago. The buzz and anticipation surrounding “Prometheus” were significant as it marked the return of Ridley Scott to the Alien franchise.
The statistic seems to overestimate the success of the later films in the Alien series when compared to the first two – Alien and Aliens. These initial movies are still considered the most admired and successful in the franchise. Unlike the more recent releases which were screened in over 3,000 theaters, these earlier ones did not have nearly as wide a release.
In the Alien series, only Alien vs. Predator (2004) and Alien: Covenant (2017) managed to open domestically with earnings surpassing $30 million. Specifically, AvP had a strong start with $38 million, while Alien: Covenant followed closely behind with $36 million.
An Alien: Romulus Sequel?
Following such a powerful debut, it’s natural for Alien fans to ponder whether Romulus might provide an opportunity for a new addition to the series.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alvarez mentioned the possibility of a Romulus sequel. Although the idea didn’t immediately cross his mind while making the movie, he did contemplate expansions for the story afterwards.
As a gamer, I instinctively dive into the world of storytelling without considering sequels or franchises. In my gaming life, games are simply tales waiting to be explored. Over the past decade here, this has been the language I’ve picked up. So, once we wrapped up our current adventure, we started pondering, “What if they reach Yvaga? Would it be a paradise or a perilous place? We tend to think it’s probably the latter that they romanticize and dream about. Naturally, this led us to wonder about where the story goes next and what awaits them.” And then, just a few minutes in, we realized, “Wow, this sounds like a sequel!”
