In the grand tapestry of life, few moments shine as brightly as the experiences shared by a family, and Shawn Johnson-East’s recent European adventure is a testament to this truth. As I delve into their journey, I am struck by their spirit of adventure, resilience, and the deep love they have for their children.
What’s in a name? Would a GOAT by any other name dominate so hard?
Indeed, that’s correct. If Simone Biles is considering a fresh nickname, Drew, who’s only four years old and Shawn Johnson East’s daughter, has a thoughtful idea to share.
During the 2024 Paris Olympics women’s gymnastics individual all-around competition, Shawn told TopMob News in an exclusive interview that his daughter kept asking, “Mama, where’s The Best?” This was because he frequently referred to Simone as ‘the best’, so instead of asking for Simone, she started saying ‘The Best’.
As a devoted follower, I too found myself captivated during the August 1st event, just like the gymnast who won a gold medal and three silvers in Beijing’s 2008 Games. Despite her doubt about whether her eldest child could endure two minutes, ten minutes, or the entire duration, the preschooler was completely engrossed as she watched Simone and teammate Suni Lee claim their podium spots.
Shawn, aged 32, remarked that Drew seemed genuinely captivated. Notably, Teri Johnson, his mom, and Andrew East, his spouse, were also present at the event. He added, “She found it incredibly unique, and indeed it was. It felt like a truly remarkable full-circle moment.”
She pointed out that the experience itself might not automatically propel her daughter towards a career in gymnastics.
“She liked to watch it,” said Shawn, “but she still is all gung ho on ice skating.”
In my personal perspective, what truly captivated my children, Drew (age 3) and Bear (8 months), during our recent European excursion, which encompassed destinations like London and Sorrento, Italy, were the unforgettable experiences we shared.
“Probably the chocolate croissants,” joked Shawn.
Andrew agreed, “Instead of the gymnastics meet being the best part, it was Mickey that truly stole the show for me.”
Beyond our trip to Disneyland Paris, Shawn reminisced, “Some of our best moments occurred outside the Olympics,” he admitted. “One evening that stands out was after dinner, we spent time playing tag in the yard as the most stunning sunset graced the sky. It was a simple joy, just being a family and exploring a new location together, which made it all the more enjoyable.”
As for what truly sealed the deal on that unforgettable journey, I must admit, it was the priceless opportunity to break free from the structured pandemonium of regular Nashville visits and immerse myself in an authentic experience, off the beaten path.
The ex-NFL long snapper, aged 32, shared that he found it enjoyable since their daily life is quite predictable at home. However, stepping out of our usual routine led to creating many cherished moments, such as impromptu dance parties in the living room during mornings and evenings.
At home, though, they try to stick to the same choreography.
Andrew shared one of their strategies for managing three children under five: “We strive to prepare breakfast ahead of when the kids wake up,” he said. “For dinner, during this season, we find it beneficial because one of us is outside playing with the kids while the other prepares the meal indoors. This helps reduce the chaos a bit and allows us to serve food before everyone starts digging in.”
Later on, whatever remains is placed inside a Rubbermaid Brilliance container. Shawn referred to it as leftovers that are either eaten the following day or food prepared for the next day. He added that the durable, leakproof, and shatter-resistant pieces are convenient because his children like to throw them in there without worry of them breaking apart, which is a plus.
The parents of three have also mastered the art of bending, not breaking.
Take their before-dinner witching hour, for instance.
Shawn explained, “I’ve been creating what we call snack trays or charcuterie boards. Essentially, you select a platter and arrange small portions of items from your refrigerator on it. Each item offers just two or three bites. It’s brilliant! They’ll devour the entire tray and it keeps them satisfied for a few hours.”
As for Shawn, she can hardly get her fill.
She finds it delightful to observe that her “three small, yet extraordinary humans” are blossoming. They are compassionate, gentle, brimming with energy, and possessing an untamed spirit. Each day, their unique personalities become more evident, bringing her immense pleasure.
1. Draw is excelling in her big sister duties, Jet is showing great potential as an assistant chef (He adores helping you cook), while Bear is simply enjoying every passing moment.
Whenever his older siblings arrive home from school or outings, Shawn mentioned that Bear seems particularly joyful. It appears he feels most comfortable with them, and watching their growing interaction is quite entertaining.
The proof is in the family photos they snapped during their European getaway, which Shawn and Andrew gamely shared with TopMob News.
Shawn Johnson East, who won a gold medal and three silvers at the 2008 Olympics, might rightfully claim additional trophies for accompanying her entire family – husband Andrew East and their children Drew, Jett, and Bear – to Paris sixteen years after her competition.
The athlete told TopMob News that she welcomed her son Jett in July 2021, and as Tokyo was happening at that time, she missed the Winter Olympics. She expressed her longing for the Olympic atmosphere and stated that they would all be present for the event. Despite potentially appearing chaotic, they will indeed be there.
Their trip down the Seine was a highlight of the madness. “We got to see SO many historic buildings,” Shawn shared on Instagram, “and the kids loved it.”
It was a special full-circle experience for Shawn to watch Simone Biles, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey, Suni Lee, and Hezly Rivera compete for the U.S. gymnastics team. She shared with TopMob News that being back at the Olympics, 16 years later, alongside her husband and children, carried a significant emotional resonance for her.
Though she acknowledged her 4-year-old daughter would likely judge just one element of the competition.
Shawn confessed that Drew primarily watches gymnastics just for the leotards, and he added that her attention might last around 20 minutes before moving on.
Shawn posted on Instagram, “Mom and Dad are getting by on very little rest, but they’re loving every moment!” He said this following their voyage along the Seine River and a stop at the Eiffel Tower. “I wouldn’t give up this experience for anything in the world,” he added.
Regarding their visit to the renowned landmark, Shawn posted on Instagram, “There were 1,665 steps, and we ascended each and every one with our children in tow.”
As I embarked on our weeks-long European journey, I admitted it was a challenging endeavor, but my resolve remained steadfast. “We’ve got this,” I assured myself and my family, knowing well that our children are seasoned travelers.
Following a trip to Paris’ Basilique du Sacré-Cœur de Montmartre, as well as various stores and eateries, Shawn exclaimed, “This day will be memorable!” or simply, “What a day to remember!”
During their time in Paris, the travelers bookended their trip with visits to London (experiencing afternoon tea and touring Buckingham Palace), as well as to Sorrento, Italy.
Shawn shared with TopMob that they plan to travel through various European cities for an entire month. They aim to explore every inch of the continent. Their mode of transportation will be a mix of trains, cars, airplanes, and even boats.
Though Shawn cracked the highlight of the trip for her kids would be an outing to Disneyland Paris, she and Andrew enjoyed their beach day in Italy.
Shawn mentioned that they take their entire family on vacations because they’d feel really lonely without them. However, if probed further, they explained that having their children around makes life far more enjoyable and enriching for them.
Experiencing the opportunity to forge foundational memories with our threesome of little ones is like a dream realized for us. Witnessing their delight in every fresh encounter makes it all worthwhile.
Before returning to Nashville, the duo enjoyed their final day soaking up the Italian sun. On social media, Shawn announced that this trip had been an unforgettable experience, labeled as the “journey of a lifetime.”
