Netflix withholds prize pot from reality show winner after contract breach

As someone who has spent years navigating the cutthroat world of social media and reality television, I can wholeheartedly support Netflix’s decision to withhold the prize money from Oking, the winner of The Influencer. Confidentiality is the backbone of any competition show, and a breach of that trust undermines the integrity of the entire production.

Netflix has revealed that it’s holding back the award money from the victor of their South Korean reality series, The Influencer.

After the reveal of YouTuber Oking’s identity as the winner in May, prior to the release of the series and the formal announcement of the victor.

Netflix has acknowledged a breach of contract and is holding back the KRW300million ($224,000) prize money that was awarded to Oking.

Netflix explained to SBS Entertainment News that to ensure the integrity and impartiality of “The Influencer” competition, the prize would not be given to any participant who breached the confidentiality agreements outlined in their contract.

Keeping secrets about a show before it airs is an essential step, as it safeguards the labor and dedication of everyone involved in making and ultimately delivering the show for the audience’s enjoyment. This step serves as a mutual pledge between staff and cast members who aspire for the show’s success.

In the description for the Korean reality show titled “The Influencer,” it is stated that: “77 prominent figures from South Korea’s social media scene participate in a series of tasks intended to evaluate their capacity to captivate audiences.”

“The last one standing will claim the title of the ultimate influencer.”
