Bodyguard’s Keeley Hawes to lead thriller from The Tourist creators

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for thrillers and a soft spot for mother-son narratives, I find myself eagerly anticipating the arrival of “The Assassin” on Prime Video. The pedigree of Two Brothers Pictures, coupled with the captivating cast led by Keeley Hawes and Freddie Highmore, promises a rollercoaster ride filled with suspense and unexpected twists.

According to recent announcements, the talented duo behind The Tourist, Harry and Jack Williams, will be introducing a fresh, heart-pounding thriller on Prime Video.

It appears that Two Brothers Pictures is preparing for another action-packed series titled “The Assassin”, and the main actors have just been announced.

In the latest series, Keeley Hawes from “Bodyguard” takes on the role of mother Julie, while Freddie Highmore known for “The Good Doctor” portrays son Edward. Their lives are put at risk when Julie’s past reemerges to pose a threat.

Given that Julie once held the role of an assassin but now leads a retired life, this show appears to promise a thrilling ride with numerous unexpected plots unfolding as hidden agendas come to light and concealed truths surface.

On a secluded Greek island lives a retired assassin named Julie (Hawes). One day, her son Edward (Highmore), who’s traveling from England, pays her an unexpected visit, leading to a somewhat prickly reunion between them.

Equipped with inquiries about fresh revelations concerning his paternity, Edward struggles to pick the opportune moment to discuss this sensitive topic with his elusive mother. However, when the right time eventually arrives, their situation takes a chilling turn as Julie’s perilous past resurfaces, compelling them to escape the island and go into hiding together.

Edward’s pursuit of the truth confronts Julie’s secretiveness as they’re compelled to collaborate in a struggle for life, pushing their troubled bond to the breaking point.

“As they delve into an ominous plot they perceive as their sole menace, a more devastating peril arises that threatens to dismantle their bond completely. In a desperate struggle against time, Julie strives to preserve Edward and rebuild their relationship, as events from the past intertwine with present realities in a global confrontation.”

Surely, Hawes is famed for her performances in shows such as Spooks, Ashes to Ashes, Line of Duty, and Bodyguard, yet she’s currently gracing our television screens in Netflix’s production Scoop along with Orphan Black: Echoes.

Speaking of myself, I started my acting journey quite young, gracing the silver screen in films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and The Spiderwick Chronicles. However, it’s my later roles that truly resonated with audiences, particularly in Bates Motel and The Good Doctor. These projects marked significant milestones for me, culminating in the recent conclusion of their seventh and final seasons.

The confirmed cast for the film “The Assassin” also includes Gina Gershon, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Jack Davenport, Alan Dale, Gerald Kyd, Devon Terrell, Richard Dormer, and David Dencik.

More details about the cast are yet to be revealed, and currently, there’s no set date for when the new series will be released.

Upon the unveiling of “The Assassin,” the head of TV at Prime Video UK, Hannah Blyth, stated: “Ever since Harry and Jack presented their idea for The Assassin, we felt confident that it would strike a chord with our viewers.”

“This Assassin’s production guarantees an edge-of-your-seat thriller, centered around a captivating mother-son bond and brimming with unexpected plots that will undoubtedly captivate viewers from the opening scene to the end. We eagerly anticipate our patrons diving deep into this compelling new series.”
