PS6 release date speculation, news and rumours on Sony’s next console

PS6 release date speculation, news and rumours on Sony’s next console

As a seasoned movie buff who has seen his fair share of sequels and prequels, I can confidently say that the PlayStation 6 is shaping up to be the next blockbuster in the console world’s franchise. While the wait might feel like an eternity, as it often does for eager fans, the documents suggest we’re looking at a 2027/2028 release date – just enough time for me to finish re-watching my entire DVD collection.

Based on historical trends, it appears that the midpoint of the PlayStation 5’s life cycle has been reached (and yes, this can seem a bit unsettling).

Over time, it’s undergone numerous updates and expansions, including the PS5 Slim and PlayStation Portal, as well as many iconic games. Consequently, discussions about the PlayStation 7 are inevitable.

As a cinephile, I’ve been keeping tabs on things, and it seems like some hints are pointing towards a potential delay in the release of the next generation.

Thankfully, this means we won’t have to fork out on new hardware for a while yet.

But when might we expect the PS6 release date to be?

Let’s take a deep dive and speculate…

When will we get a PS6 release date?

PS6 release date speculation, news and rumours on Sony’s next console

As a movie buff peering into the future, it seems like I won’t be able to get my hands on the PS7 before 2028, based on what the official papers suggest and the chatter swirling around about it.

In the course of the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority examination into Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard (which occurred in 2022), some papers have disclosed that Sony has no plans to launch a new gaming console before the year 2027.

The interesting part of this document, which certainly seems to imply that Sony will not be launching the next PlayStation console on this side of 2027, reads as follows:

Microsoft has proposed that Activision’s games will remain playable on PlayStation until 2027. This means that by the time Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) launches their next-generation PlayStation console, expected around [redacted], they would no longer have access to popular titles like Call of Duty and others. This could leave them exposed to players switching platforms and potentially weaken their competitive standing in the gaming market.

As a die-hard movie buff, I’d like to share some insights about creating a blockbuster franchise that rivals the success of “Call of Duty.” If SIE were to embark on such a journey, it would require an immense amount of time and financial resources – we’re talking years and billions here. The story of Electronic Arts’ Battlefield serves as a cautionary tale: even with the means to challenge, success might remain elusive.

This roughly falls in line with the length of recent console cycles, a cycle which Sony’s Executive Vice President of Hardware Engineering and Operation Masayasu Ito confirmed would be repeated in an interview with Game Informer.

Previously, a new platform would typically have a lifespan of 7 to 10 years. However, due to the fast pace of technological advancements, we’re now looking at a platform lifecycle of approximately 6 to 7 years.

He explained: “So, regarding the PS5 platform, our approach is based on a cycle of approximately six to seven years. By following this cycle, we aim to modify the hardware and integrate new technological advancements. This idea was behind our decision, and the PS4 Pro, launched halfway through the PS4’s lifecycle, serves as an example of it.”

According to Omdia senior analyst George Jijiashvili, as shared with IGN, the company predicts that the PS5 Pro will come out towards the end of 2024 – a year later than when the PS4 Pro was released during its lifecycle. Based on this pattern, it seems Sony plans to elongate the PS5’s life cycle, and they might unveil the PS6 in the year 2028.

It seems that it might take a while longer for Sony to unveil their next console model. Since you’ve been hesitant, this could be an excellent opportunity to consider upgrading to a PlayStation 5.

PS6 price: How much could it cost?

To estimate the potential price of the upcoming PS6 console, we’ll need to look back at historical pricing trends. In the UK, the PS3 debuted at £425, the PS4 was introduced at a lower price point of £349, and most recently, the PS5 launched at £449, making it the priciest of the three.

On the one hand, it’s easy to imagine this upward trajectory continuing, but it’s also important to note that the growing popularity of game streaming could counter this. Game streaming relies on a good internet connection to stream games to your console without any disc or download, both PlayStation and Xbox are introducing streaming facilities and they should be far more developed by the time the next console comes around.

From my perspective as a gaming enthusiast, streaming games essentially shifts most of the heavy processing workload from your console to the cloud, reducing the strain on your hardware. This suggests that future consoles might prioritize lightning-fast internet connections over expensive, high-powered internal components. If I were to take an educated guess, I’d estimate the price range for these next-gen consoles to be around £479 to £499.

As a passionate movie critic, I’ve been intrigued by the surge of artificial intelligence (AI) infiltrating the realm of game development. This technological advancement promises to expedite production timelines and liberate valuable resources – a tantalizing prospect indeed. However, it’s important to acknowledge that this is a highly debated topic among creative minds, stirring up controversy across the industry.

What could we expect from the PS6?

It appears historical trends indicate we might soon have a gaming console, possibly named the PS6, priced between £400-£500, expected to launch in the years 2027 or 2028. However, this is contingent upon how game streaming affects the console market in the future.

The upcoming generation of video game consoles is undoubtedly significant, with the PS5 currently leading sales over the Xbox Series X. However, it’s important to note that Microsoft has taken strategic steps in the market by acquiring major game developers such as ZeniMax Media and even Activision Blizzard, which could potentially shift the balance.

After any contracts between Microsoft and Sony expire, there’s a possibility that future Call of Duty games may only be available on Xbox when the PlayStation 6 is released.

As a devoted PlayStation enthusiast, I must acknowledge that while the PS6 promises an exceptional gaming experience, some gamers might find themselves drawn to the allure of Xbox. Yet, fear not, Sony devotees! The PlayStation team has been proactively expanding its horizons, acquiring the legendary Destiny developers – Bungie. This strategic move undoubtedly strengthens the PS6’s appeal and ensures that our loyalty remains rewarded with top-tier gaming content.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the surge in Sony’s exclusive content for the PS5. With the phasing out of support for the PS4, we’re seeing some fantastic titles emerge. For instance, Insomniac Games’ Wolverine is shaping up to be a remarkable follow-up to Spider-Man 2, and let’s not forget about Rise of the Rōnin and Death Stranding 2. These games are just a few examples of the exciting lineup Sony has been building for its next-gen console.

Amidst all these developments, it’s a given that Intellectual Property (IP) and franchises will play crucial roles in the upcoming console battles, often referred to as the “next generation,” and Sony can expect significant competition in this arena.
