Seriously, Will Coraline Ever Get a Sequel?

In an interview with ComicBook some time ago, Gaiman hinted at the possibility of Coraline 2, emphasizing that he would not definitively reject the idea.

Neil Gaiman has consistently maintained that he wouldn’t create a “Coraline 2” unless the story was as captivating or more so than the original. So far, he hasn’t found such a tale…To be clear, he doesn’t want to produce a sequel that feels like a low-budget follow-up. Instead, it should be on par with “Toy Story 2” or “The Godfather Part 2,” where the sequel surpasses the original in quality. Therefore, while he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of a “Coraline 2,” he would only consider it if the new story truly outshines the first one.

First presented on the big screen back in 2009, Coraline garnered a total of $124.6 million at the box office and has since gained a dedicated following. The film received numerous accolades, including Annie Awards for exceptional Music, Character Design, Production Design in an Animated Feature, and nominations for Best Animated Feature from both the Academy Awards and Golden Globes.

Summary: “A young girl ventures into a hidden doorway in her newly acquired home and stumbles upon an alternate world that mirrors her life, yet it’s significantly improved. However, as this whimsical escapade becomes perilous and her phony guardians attempt to retain her permanently, Coraline relies on her quick thinking, resilience, and courage to rescue her family and return home. The voice acting features Dakota Fanning, Teri Hatcher, Ian McShane, Jennifer Saunders, and Dawn French. Produced by Henry Selick, Claire Jennings, Bill Mechanic, and Mary Sandell, with both screenwriting and direction by Henry Selick.”
