Classic Game Released on Steam And It's Free

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I can confidently say that Marathon Infinity is a hidden gem worth revisiting. Having grown up during the golden era of gaming, I fondly remember the days when games like Marathon Infinity graced our computers and consoles.

A timeless video game has been made accessible on Steam, and it comes at no cost. This particular title is a third-person shooter that originates from the groundbreaking year of 1996, a significant milestone in gaming history. In this year, gamers were gifted with numerous classics such as Super Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Wave Race 64, Donkey Kong Country 3, Super Mario RPG, Pokemon Red and Green, Diablo, Quake, Sid Meier’s Civilization II, Wipeout XL, Star Ocean, among others. It was also the year that Bungie launched its seventh game.

For the seventh production from their Washington studio, they launched the third installment in the Marathon trilogy – a game titled Marathon Infinity. Currently, you can grab this game on Steam without spending a dime. As I type this, it’s so fresh that it has garnered only six user reviews, all of which are favorable.

Originally only available for Macintosh computers, “Marathon Infinity” was highly praised but fell short of commercial success because it was only compatible with a limited range of software. However, by Macintosh standards, it did manage to sell quite well.

Marathon Infinity expands the confined universe of the Marathon series significantly. The single/cooperative campaign, titled “‘Blood Tides of Lh’owon,'” offers 20 levels with fresh textures, weapons, and adversaries. Beyond that, this scenario provides a surprising new perspective on the characters and events in the story. After defeating the Pfhor and reviving the ancient remnants of the S’pht, players are faced with a world where allies turn into adversaries, and nothing is as it appears…”

The official Steam description goes on to say: “Marathon Infinity, originally developed by Bungie in 1996, is now maintained by its dedicated fanbase. Enjoy an authentic gaming experience using the original game files, enhanced with features such as widescreen HUD support, improved graphics and perspective, positional audio, and smooth 60+ frames per second interpolation for a modern twist. This game runs on the Aleph One engine, which is open-source under the GNU General Public License (GPL) Version 3.”

Should you choose to play Marathon Infinity through Steam, be prepared to invest roughly seven to eight hours to finish the game from beginning to end. Regrettably, similar to many games of its time, it doesn’t provide much in the way of replay value. As for Steam Deck compatibility, the listing is silent on this matter, offering no indication whether it’s supported or not – there’s just no information available.
