Alien: Romulus Director Teases Hidden Ripley Easter Egg

As a gamer who has spent countless hours navigating the treacherous terrains of Alien video games and binge-watching every single movie installment in this iconic franchise, I can confidently say that Alien: Romulus is a masterpiece that perfectly captures the essence of fear, suspense, and mystery that fans have come to love. The film’s focus on young space colonizers facing the terrifying alien life form is not only refreshing but also a smart move to tap into the nostalgia of old-school gamers like me who remember the original Alien arcade game.

Over the weekend, the latest addition to the popular Alien series, titled Alien: Romulus, debuted in cinemas and had an impressive opening weekend. The movie is currently garnering high praise on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 81% score from critics and 86% from audiences, making it one of the best-reviewed Alien films in almost four decades. Fans of the franchise will notice numerous references to previous Alien projects, and there are even some subtle easter eggs that you might have missed. In a recent interview on the ReelBlend Podcast, director Fede Álvarez hinted at a secret clue as to where Sigourney Weaver’s character Ellen Ripley could be during the events of the film.

Alvarez replied, “It might not be out of the question,” when asked about the possibility of Ripley being included in the Romulus storyline. Since we don’t know all the details from her years adrift, I can’t reveal more. However, due to legal constraints, I can’t say more. In my opinion, it’s not unthinkable; in fact, I believe it’s quite plausible that she could have played a role in this narrative somehow.”

Alvarez mentioned, “There are several secrets I’ve concealed within that film which hold the solution to this riddle. They’re expertly camouflaged, yet they’re quite visible if you know where to look. In fact, they’re almost like hidden gems in plain sight.” He went on to say that he’s strategically placed “a few hints” within the movie, but it would ruin the mystery if he disclosed what these hints are at this point.

What Is Alien: Romulus About?

The upcoming sci-fi film, titled “Romulus,” is being marketed as more of a spinoff than a direct sequel in the “Alien” series. It tells the tale of a band of youthful space settlers who encounter the most horrifying creature in existence from the universe. Previously, director Ridley Scott mentioned that a deleted scene from James Cameron’s “Aliens,” featuring young colonists, served as the inspiration for the storyline behind “Romulus.”

“My first instinct, just to try something different that hasn’t been seen before, was to approach it form the angle of characters who are not professionals or scientists; they’re not even adults,” he said. “I liked this concept of putting people in the front seat of the story who are closer to what the audience is — not that the audience is young, more that the audience is completely virgin to the realities of space. When the characters are professionals, they know more than you do. But when they’re still in their early 20s, they don’t know how to operate the f-cking airlock.”

He went on to explain, “As children, most of them worked together on the same vessel. This is how they became acquainted… They share a rich history because they are each other’s only family. Their bond runs deep, resembling more of a surrogate sibling relationship; some of them even shared living quarters. Many of the film’s main themes revolve around siblinghood and its significance. Surprisingly, the larger Romulus plot and the Weyland-Yutani corporation are also intertwined with this familial connection.”

As a gamer, I’m excited about the upcoming movie “Alien: Romulus” where I get to see Cailee Spaeny (known as Priscilla), David Jonsson (from “Agatha Christie’s Murder is Easy”), Archie Renaux (“Shadow and Bone”), Isabela Merced (“The Last of Us”), Spike Fearn (“Aftersun”) and Aileen Wu. This thrilling sci-fi adventure is directed by Fede Alvarez, who previously wowed us with “Evil Dead” and “Don’t Breathe”, and co-written by his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues (“Don’t Breathe 2”). The story is based on characters created by Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett. Can’t wait to see this one!

Alien: Romulus is now playing in theaters.
