Bridget Jones 4: Release date, cast, and latest Mad About the Boy news

As a long-time admirer of British cinema and a self-proclaimed connoisseur of all things Bridget Jones, I must say that the announcement of Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy has filled my heart with more joy than Mr. Darcy ever could!

Approximately a decade since her last appearance, Renee Zellweger is poised for a comeback in yet another installment of the cherished Bridget Jones series.

By February 2024, there was a buzz on the internet regarding rumors of a fresh film in production, over eight years since Bridget Jones’s Baby hit the screens.

2016 saw the release of a film that continued the storyline from Bridget Jones’s Diary (released in 2001) and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (released in 2004).

Now, it’s officially confirmed that the fourth film in the series, titled “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” is set for release. The cast and release date have both been revealed.

In this new update, Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant will be stepping back into their characters: the bumbling TV producer and the rogue Daniel Cleaver. But, who else could join the cast? Here’s a rundown of all the details regarding the upcoming movie.

When is the Bridget Jones 4 release date?

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy will be released in UK and US cinemas on 14th February 2025.

The US release date was initially announced but the UK release will be the same.

Filming began on 10th May 2024 in the UK and concluded on 8th August 2024.

In 2022, author Helen Fielding disclosed that she was developing a fourth film during a conversation on the TopMob View From My Sofa Podcast.

2016 movie “Bridget Jones’s Baby” deviated from her 2013 book “Mad About the Boy”, as it was inspired by the columns penned by Helen Fielding for “The Independent” in 2005 and 2006, rather than the novel.

Inquired about the possibility of Bridget returning in the movie version of Mad About the Boy, Fielding responded affirmatively, expressing optimism about its realization. “Indeed, I’m working on it,” she said. “I truly hope it comes to fruition. Every film that gets produced is a miracle – it’s incredibly challenging to bring films to life and make them excellent. However, I can’t wait to see it up on the big screen.”

Bridget Jones 4 cast: Who could star in Mad About the Boy?

The following cast members have been confirmed by Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.

  • Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones
  • Hugh Grant as Daniel Cleaver
  • Emma Thompson as Dr Rawlings
  • Chiwetel Ejiofor as Mr Wallaker
  • Leo Woodall as Roxster
  • Jim Broadbent as Colin Jones
  • Gemma Jones as Pamela Jones
  • Isla Fisher as Rebecca
  • Josette Simon as TBC
  • Nico Parker as Chloe
  • Leila Farzad as Nicolette
  • Sarah Solemani as Miranda
  • Sally Phillips as Sharon “Shazzer”
  • Shirley Henderson as Jude
  • James Callis as Tom
  • Celia Imrie as Una Alconbury

Renee Zellweger will once again step into the shoes of Bridget Jones, a character that earned her an Oscar nomination. Most recently, she was seen on-screen as Judy Garland in ‘Judy’, winning her second Oscar for this role in 2020.

In “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy,” Hugh Grant is set to reprise his role as the roguish Daniel Cleaver, while Dame Emma Thompson will make a return appearance as Dr. Rawlings, having made audiences laugh uproariously during her first stint playing the character in “Bridget Jones’s Baby.”

As a movie aficionado, I’m excited to share that we’ll see familiar faces reprising their roles, such as Jim Broadbent and Gemma Jones playing Bridget’s beloved parents. Additionally, Bridget’s cherished friends will also make an appearance in the film.

Additionally, two new actors, Leo Woodall (One Day) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave, Doctor Strange), have been added to the cast. Woodall takes on the role of the title’s “Boy,” portraying Roxster, a witty younger love interest for the main character. Meanwhile, Ejiofor assumes the part of the headteacher for Bridget’s children.

In other locations, Nico Parker portrays Chloe, the babysitter for Bridget, while Isla Fisher takes on the role of Bridget’s neighbor, Rebecca.

It appears that Patrick Dempsey won’t be returning to play the character Jack, who was Bridget Jones’ other romantic interest in Bridget Jones’s Baby.

Is Colin Firth set to return as Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones 4?

In the announcement of the film, fans may also have noticed that Colin Firth’s name was missing.

In the novel I’ve been engrossed in, my character, Mark Darcy, meets an untimely end in a heart-wrenching accident, leaving me to ponder the cruel twists of fate.

Yet, it remains unclear if the upcoming movie will adhere closely to the book, leaving room for fans to continue hoping for the time being.

What could happen in Bridget Jones 4?

The upcoming sequel is inspired by Helen Fielding’s 2013 novel “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.” This story follows a 51-year-old single mother of two, as she navigates modern dating and its technological advancements.

It appears that Bridget could serve as a unique type of role model compared to what we’re accustomed to in the upcoming sequel.

Previously, Writer Fielding expressed her astonishment at the “sexism” evident in the initial films, and subsequently remarked: “Such writing wouldn’t fly today.”

Is there a trailer for Bridget Jones 4?

At this moment, the movie isn’t available online. But, before it hits the screens, a sneak peek video hinting at the filmmaking process has been exhibited in movie theaters.

We will be quick to update this as soon as it becomes available.
