As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the cyberpunk universe of Blade Runner, the news about the upcoming Prime Video series, Blade Runner 2099, has me absolutely thrilled! The return of this iconic franchise after years in development is like finding a rare relic in the digital ruins of a post-apocalyptic world.
The production for the Prime Video limited series titled “Blade Runner 2099” is in progress. This new installment follows on from the original “Blade Runner” movie and its sequel “Blade Runner 2049.” In this series, Michelle Yeoh portrays a Replicant character that’s close to reaching the end of its lifespan. Dimitri Abold from the “Hunger Games” franchise, Katelyn Rose Downey from “The Nun II,” Lewis Gribben from “Somewhere Boy,” and Daniel Rigby from “Renegade Nell” have been added to the cast as regular characters along with Hunter Schaeffer and Yeoh. Additionally, Amy Lennox (“Holby City”), Johnny Harris (“A Gentleman In Moscow”), Sheila Atim (“The Woman King”), and Matthew Needham (“House of the Dragon”) are set to appear as recurring guest stars in this series.
For several years, the project was under development, but its progress came to a standstill due to writers and actors strikes last year. However, one of the producers has announced that it is now active again, and everything seems promising.
The film adaptation derived from Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Android Dream of Electric Sheep?” has had a complex journey in the realm of Hollywood. Initially, the first installment failed to generate profits at the box office but was later hailed as one of the most esteemed and impactful science fiction films ever made. With its original standing firmly established over time, Harrison Ford reprised his role for “Blade Runner 2049,” anticipating a triumphant return…yet even this film fell short in meeting studio predictions regarding its performance.
As Michael Green shared with The Direct, filming is currently underway. Showrunner Silka Luisa has crafted an exceptional series, as evidenced by the daily footage and script readings I’ve seen. They’re breathtakingly beautiful. Reading through the script only heightens my anticipation for how she’s expanded the world and made it more expansive. It’s a truly remarkable, intelligent, emotionally resonant story.
1982’s “Blade Runner” by Ridley Scott ignited a series of films, yet despite quickly gaining cult status, it took 35 years for a sequel to materialize. In 2017, Ryan Gosling collaborated with Harrison Ford in “Blade Runner 2049”, although no further installments followed. However, since then, the film’s producers and studios have been actively discussing the potential of more “Blade Runner” films.
As a fervent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be part of the team bringing “Blade Runner 2099” to life! Joining me as executive producers are Silka Luisa, fresh from her successful run on “Shining Girls”, along with Scott, Alcon Entertainment co-founders Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, Alcon’s President of Television Ben Roberts, David W. Zucker and Clayton Krueger from Scott Free Productions, Tom Spezialy, Richard Sharkey, Michael Green, Cynthia Yorkin, Frank Giustra, and Isa Dick Hackett. According to Deadline, the talented Jonathan van Tulleken of “Sh?gun” fame will direct the first two episodes and serve as executive producer as well, with Steven Johnson stepping in as co-executive producer.
As of now, we don’t have a specific release date announced for “Blade Runner 2099”. However, it’s widely expected that it might premiere towards the end of 2025 or perhaps at the beginning of 2026.
