As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for all things epic, I must confess that my excitement for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has reached unprecedented heights, especially after learning about Charlie Vickers’ captivating portrayal of young Sauron.

Add The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to your watchlist

Thirty-one-year-old Australian actor Charlie Vickers portrays a youthful version of the formidable antagonist Sauron from the initial tales and films.

Were you not aware that your original character, Halbrand, turned out to be Sauron in disguise only during the third episode of season one while you were actually filming it?

Yeah — though I had an inkling because I auditioned reading from Paradise Lost, playing Satan! So that set alarm bells ringing that maybe there was a dark side to this character.

How big a fan of The Lord of the Rings were you before The Rings of Power came calling?

Although I had seen the movies numerous times, I hadn’t delved deeper into anything related to Lord of the Rings. The only exception was playing the PlayStation game. When I got cast, I realized there was a lot of material I needed to read. However, one of the most exciting aspects of the role was immersing myself fully in J.R.R. Tolkien‘s world.

I never felt daunted by Sauron – it was a privilege to be a custodian of the character

How does it feel to step into the shoes of one of literature’s most formidable villains, who is sparsely detailed by J.R.R. Tolkien, and in Peter Jackson’s adaptations, is portrayed merely as a large eye?

I found it thrilling, rather than intimidating, to have the responsibility of portraying this character. It was an exciting prospect to bring to life a side of Sauron that has not been depicted before – his humanoid form.

Unimaginable from when you relocated from Australia to attend drama school in London aged 21?

Experiencing it made an incredible impact on me – I’d previously visited England just once, and all my loved ones were back in Australia. Leaving behind the life I had cultivated was daunting, but I took the leap to chase a dream.

What was your first paid acting gig?

As a passionate movie enthusiast, let me share an exciting experience: participating in a script development workshop alongside the incredibly talented Bertie Carvel. His skills left me utterly astounded! In the realm of television, I had the privilege of being part of a series titled “Medici”. This production was a fantastic learning platform for me. For six months, we filmed in Tuscany and Rome, immersing ourselves in the rich Italian culture. The renowned Sean Bean portrayed my uncle on screen, making every moment on set feel like a precious gem I was eager to collect!

And now you’re doing hair-raising stunts in The Rings of Power. How is series two, action-wise?

I’m quite chatty, and I find myself frequently in a blacksmith’s workshop, which isn’t a secret. It did come with its own challenges. However, by the end of the season, I got to brandish a sword. Unlike the thrilling scene from season one where I galloped a horse through hordes of orcs, fought, then dismounted and snatched a spear, this stunt was the most hair-raising I’ve ever performed.
