As a die-hard fan of Spawn and collector of McFarlane action figures, I can’t help but be absolutely thrilled by Todd McFarlane‘s latest Kickstarter campaign for the Medieval Spawn figure. Having been following his work since the early 90s, it’s incredible to see how far he’s come and the innovative steps he continues to take in the industry.
During our recent visit to Comic Con International in San Diego last month, Todd McFarlane, the creator of Spawn, unveiled an initial glimpse of the upcoming Medieval Spawn action figure he’s currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter. The new fundraising effort has surpassed McFarlane’s previous records, amassing $1 million in pledges within just five hours. This is a remarkable pace compared to the past Spawn Kickstarter campaign, which took 23 hours to reach the same milestone. A significant factor contributing to this success is McFarlane’s promise of an expedited production process; he has already initiated the manufacturing of these figures. McFarlane aims for these figures to break records in the action figure category on Kickstarter, and many are expected to be delivered by the holiday season. Notably, some will even ship directly from Hong Kong, only a few months after the campaign concludes.
During our chat, McFarlane playfully hinted that instead of the usual span of a year or two, he aims to complete this project in just 90 days. He’s reminiscing about past accomplishments to see how much faster he can work on not only the original product but also its delivery schedule as well.
McFarlane discussed a Kickstarter campaign launched at the onset of the pandemic, stating, “Since everyone is idle, let’s be productive.” The focus was on remodeling Spawn, based on the initial toy created in 1994. McFarlane emphasized that this would be an updated version, boasting it as their most detailed figure yet. The package includes a plethora of weapons, armor, and accessories if the campaign goals are met.
The fundraising campaign for these colorful figures swiftly surpassed its initial target of $100,000 in just two minutes, and later doubled its goal within a mere four minutes, breaking the previous record set by another campaign (you can learn more about the details and purchase them here). These sought-after figures – available in three color options – quickly sold out all 700 Premium 3-Packs within 45 minutes. At present, this campaign has already garnered over 7,000 supporters, raising more than $1.45 million, with a remaining 26 days still left on the clock.
