Doctor Who spin-off adds Ruth Madeley and surprise Torchwood character in first look

As a dedicated Doctor Who fan with over three decades of fandom under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest news about The War Between The Land And The Sea spin-off has sent me into a state of pure excitement! With Ruth Madeley reprising her role as Shirley Anne Bingham and the return of Colin McFarlane as General Austin Pierce, this series promises to be an unmissable addition to the Doctor Who universe.

In a brand-new photo, the ensemble for the Doctor Who spin-off show titled “The War Between The Land And The Sea” has gathered together, featuring not one but two fresh faces joining the team.

It’s been confirmed that Ruth Madeley will once again take on the role of Shirley Anne Bingham, the scientific advisor for UNIT, in the upcoming spin-off series.

In 2023, Madeley was seen portraying a character in two Doctor Who episodes titled “The Star Beast” and “The Giggle.”

While audiences may have expected Shirley to feature in The War Between The Land And The Sea, the second fresh face in the cast comes as a bit of a shock…

Colin McFarlane is set to make an appearance in the series, portraying General Austin Pierce – a character he previously brought to life in the 2009 miniseries Torchwood: Children of Earth, which was 15 years prior.

Additionally to the earlier mentioned actors, Russell Tovey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jemma Redgrave reprising her role as Kate Stewart, and Alexander Devrient portraying Colonel Ibrahim have now been confirmed for the cast.

The complete cast can be seen in a photo from a table read that was released today (23rd August).

As a cinephile, I’d rephrase it like this: “I’m captivated by ‘The War Between The Land And The Sea.’ When an age-old, formidable creature rises from the ocean, sending ripples of fear across humanity, we find ourselves on the brink of a global catastrophe. As the safety of our planet hangs in the balance, UNIT takes center stage, engaging in a fierce battle between land and sea.”

Starting this month, I’m thrilled to be part of a team that’s embarking on a new series! Dylan Holmes-Williams, who previously directed Doctor Who episodes 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble, is taking the helm for five episodes. Notably, Pete McTighe and our showrunner Russell T Davies are collaborating on the scripts for these exciting installments. I can hardly wait to see it all come together!

At San Diego Comic-Con scheduled for July 2024, Davies revealed that the new series will explore: “When the Doctor is away, who takes care of things? That’s the focus of this show. How does the world manage?”

Consequently, a five-part tale titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea” will be released as a spin-off. This narrative centers around the Sea Devils from Doctor Who, first introduced in 1972.

“Deep beneath the seas reside a race, who rise daily to behold the condition of their home – our oceans. Unfortunately, what they see is devastation wrought by human hands. It’s not merely a battle, but a massive conflict, one that echoes the grandeur of epic tales.”

Looking forward to the comeback of Doctor Who this Christmas, streaming on both BBC iPlayer and BBC One! Catch up on past seasons by streaming them on BBC iPlayer as well.
