Cody Rhodes Wants to Wrestle John Cena During His WWE Retirement Tour

As a lifelong wrestling fan with decades of fervent devotion under my belt, I couldn’t help but feel a surge of nostalgia when John Cena announced his upcoming farewell tour. The thought of witnessing the final chapter of one of WWE’s most iconic figures brings an undeniable sense of bittersweetness.

John Cena is preparing for his retirement tour, which begins officially in 2025. In July at WWE Money in the Bank, Big Match John declared that his active wrestling career would end in 2025. To make this final year as comprehensive as possible, Cena aims to fill it with a full 12 months of matches. He has mentioned that he and WWE are looking at scheduling around 30-40 dates for the year 2025. Some of these dates will include WWE Royal Rumble, WWE Elimination Chamber, and WWE WrestleMania. The identity of Cena’s opponents in the ring has yet to be revealed, as the 16-time world champion emphasized that he won’t be selecting any opponents for next year.

The American Nightmare has his sights on Big Match John.

At Fanatics Fest NYC, during a live appearance, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes expressed that the possibility of wrestling John Cena would be the highest honor of his life as part of his upcoming farewell tour next year.

“It would be an unparalleled privilege to grapple with John Cena in any setting. He’s the best of all time, and that’s no exaggeration,” Rhodes expressed. “In this age we’re living in, he’s a person who keeps his promises. When he declares it’s goodbye, it means just that. If you own the farewell tour t-shirt, grab it now, because this is the real deal. I traveled with John for a year and absorbed every lesson I could, without even realizing at the time.”

Rhodes and Cena have faced off on four occasions, starting with their initial match in 2009. Their latest encounter took place in 2015, when Rhodes (going by Stardust at that point) accepted Cena’s open challenge for the WWE United States Championship.

Over the last few years, despite not having wrestled as the American Nightmare character, Cena has crossed paths with Rhodes on a couple of occasions. In March 2022, Cena introduced Rhodes to a WWE Monday Night Raw audience, and they both participated in his WWE Championship celebration at WWE WrestleMania 40, which took place in April this year.

At WrestleMania 40 in the ring last night, when I had the chance to hug him, Cody Rhodes held the championship in his right hand. I asked him, “Can you feel it?” and “Does it feel heavy?” He responded affirmatively. I told him, “It will only get heavier with time,” referring to the weight of trying to become the greatest of all time. I hope that a year from now, two years from now, or even three years from now, we can all look back and champion Cody Rhodes as the greatest of all time. That’s how it should be.
