Outlander author says final season “won’t resemble the end of the book series”

As a devoted Outlander fan who has journeyed through time and space with Jamie and Claire for years now, I must admit that the news of the final season approaching has left me with a mix of emotions. While it is exciting to know that there will be a new prequel series, Blood of My Blood, I cannot help but feel a twinge of sadness at saying goodbye to the main series.

Next year, the long-running series Outlander is set to conclude forever, marking the farewell of Jamie Fraser, portrayed by Sam Heughan, and Claire Fraser, played by Caitríona Balfe, in their final goodbye to fans.

The widely beloved fantasy drama, nearing the final stretch of its second-to-last season, has announced a forthcoming spin-off named “Blood of My Blood.” As the main series approaches its conclusion in the near future, fans may find themselves experiencing a mix of excitement and sadness.

Currently, the series creator, Diana Gabaldon, has cautioned viewers not to anticipate a final season that mirrors exactly how events unfold in her books’ conclusions.

On her Facebook page, she answered a fan’s query by stating: “I can’t reveal too many details about the show, but let me assure you, its ending will be quite different from the book series.”

As we approach Season 8, the creators have/had a challenging task ahead, as they’ve been given just ten episodes to work with (compared to sixteen in the first season). They have three entire books worth of material to fit into this shortened span: “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood”, “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone”, and “Book Ten” remain largely unaddressed from the storyline so far. Season 7 concluded (approximately) with “An Echo in the Bone”.

She went on to say: “Typically, under normal conditions, a single book is adapted per season, and about 10% of its content makes it into the show. Given that the three books in question total approximately 1,200,000 words, how much of that do you believe they can condense into just ten hours of television?”

It’s clear that they will need to carefully select key moments or storylines to shoot, and organize them in a way that coherently fits within one season while aiming for a satisfying ending.

Gabaldon emphasized that due to not being restricted by spatial constraints, she has ample room to expand the narrative. Consequently, the tenth book promises to include a considerable amount of details which the series merely cannot accommodate.

But she added: “I hope y’all will enjoy them both!”

Currently, Gabadlon is working on an unnamed tenth book, serving as a sequel to “Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone” from 2021 and continuing a series that started with the initial novel released in 1991.

In a separate Facebook post, she clarified that she provided the creative team responsible for Outlander’s TV series with a summary and dialogue suggestions to aid in their production of the final season. However, she emphasized that it isn’t feasible to recreate any of the books in their entirety.

In the US, you can stream “Outlander” on Starz, while viewers in the UK can find it on MGM+. If you’re interested in reading Diana Gabaldon’s books, they are available for purchase on Amazon.
