The Deadpool and Wolverine cameo that was cut….

As a film critic with a soft spot for comic book adaptations and a deep appreciation for the Fourth Wall-breaking antics of Deadpool, I must say that the cut cameo of Rob McElhenney as a Time Variance Authority soldier in Deadpool and Wolverine leaves me feeling like an extra who’s been forgotten on set.

The Deadpool and Wolverine movie, earning $1.1 billion so far and continuing to be a hit, is currently the highest grossing R-rated film at the box office. Lately, Ryan Reynolds has discussed the Deadpool and Wolverine scene that didn’t make it into the final cut.

Moreover, the cameo featured a Time Variance Authority soldier portrayed by Rob McElhenney, a good friend of Reynolds and joint owner of their football club Wrexham. This made the choice even more challenging.

As a film enthusiast, I’d like to share some thoughts about my pal, Rob McElhenney. He generously appeared in the special scene for #DeadpoolAndWolverine that we hope will survive in the digital extras. You know the saying, “In editing a movie, you sometimes have to sacrifice your beloved scenes.” With a heavy heart (thanks to some external influence), I had to let go of a cherished moment with this cameo.

He went on to explain that he cut the scene because the “sequence wasn’t working the way we’d originally constructed it.” and added, “Rob was the only reason it stayed in the cut for as long as it did, because even under a TVA mask and helmet, you can feel him smoldering with a raw and almost infinite reservoir of talent, writerly wit and ‘I create hit tv shows’ swagger,” he said. “Don’t even get me started on Wrexham. I wouldn’t know a love like @wrexham_afc if it weren’t for Rob McElhenney.”

Reflecting on the situation in my own words, I can’t help but feel a mix of regret and gratitude. It’s unfortunate that he traveled such a distance for an appearance that didn’t materialize as planned. Yet, I’m thankful to have had my friend by my side during filming. When Rob is around, my anxiety seems to fade away. He truly embodies the spirit of compassion. He was there for me, just as he is always there for others.
