Alien: Romulus Director Confirms One Connection to The Last of Us

As a dedicated fan of both Alien and The Last of Us franchises, I must say that recent revelations about the connections between these two worlds have left me utterly astounded! It’s not every day you discover a director drawing inspiration from one series while working on another – especially when it comes to such iconic characters as Dina from TLOU2 and Kay from Alien: Romulus.

Since the release of the Alien: Romulus movie, fans have been frequently comparing its protagonist Rain to Ellie from The Last of Us. However, contrary to popular belief, this connection isn’t related to Cailee Spaeny’s character Rain and Ellie. Instead, it stems from a confirmed link between the movie and game that pertains to Kay, the pregnant character in Alien: Romulus, whose pregnancy plays a significant role in the film. This week, director Fede Alvarez revealed that Kay’s character was actually inspired by Dina from The Last of Us Part 2.

In a different part of X, Alvarez talked about the link between the topics, prompted by someone asking if he had ever played “The Last of Us”. He admitted that he did and revealed an interesting detail – he was engaged with “The Last of Us Part 2” while penning “Alien: Romulus”. When he encountered Dina’s pregnant character in the game, it sparked an idea for his creation, Kay.

As a video game enthusiast and aspiring screenwriter, I often find myself immersed in virtual worlds while simultaneously crafting my own stories. One fateful night, I was engrossed in “The Last of Us Part II” and a particular scene involving a pregnant character named Dina struck a chord with me. It sparked an idea to create a similar pregnant character for one of my scripts, which I named Kay.

In a rather striking coincidence, Alvarez noted, Isabella Merced, who portrayed Kay in ‘Alien: Romulus’, is also set to play Dina in the second season of HBO’s ‘The Last of Us’ TV series. Although we haven’t seen Merced on the show as Season 2 hasn’t been aired yet, she has shared insights about her character’s bond with Ellie and her experiences working on challenging aspects of Season 2. The filming for the next season is complete, but its release date remains undisclosed at this time.

With the release of “Alien: Romulus,” Alvarez has been disclosing intriguing details such as these, as viewers are noticing that there might have been aspects overlooked during their initial viewing. There’s speculation about whether Rain could appear in another Alien movie, possibly a sequel to “Alien: Romulus,” but no official announcements have been made yet.
