As a long-time fan of both Troma films and Peter Dinklage’s acting prowess, I must admit my disappointment at the delayed release of the rebooted Toxic Avenger. Having watched the original back in the ’80s, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia for the iconic character and the chaotic world it inhabits.
Previously, “The Toxic Avenger” remake made its first appearance at Fantastic Fest last year, receiving an abundance of acclaim. Following its initial screening, the film garnered a remarkable 92% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes after 25 reviews, thanks to years spent in development and ultimately finding its lead actor in Peter Dinklage, who is well-known for his role in “Game of Thrones”. Regrettably, it’s been close to a year since the film’s premiere, but there’s yet to be any news about its release date. Recently, ComicBook had an opportunity to talk with Dinklage regarding his new project, “The Thicket“. In this interview, Dinklage shared some less-than-encouraging news regarding the release of “The Toxic Avenger“.
Dinklage responded by saying he wasn’t involved with it and didn’t know about the release date for The Toxic Avenger. However, he expressed a desire for the movie to be released because it was successful at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and he considers Macon Blair, the writer/director who is also in The Thicket… an amazing talent. He’s one of Dinklage’s favorite people and artists, so hopefully, it will get its chance to shine in the toxic light.
At the beginning of this page, you’ll find our interview with Dinklage, along with his co-star from “The Thicket,” Juliette Lewis. Enjoy!
What Is The Toxic Avenger About?
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but share my excitement about “The Toxic Avenger,” a movie that’s deeply rooted in the timeless legacy of the iconic independent film company, Troma. Here’s a brief rundown of what this film offers:
In contrast to the original film from 1984, Macon Blair’s modern adaptation follows a monstrous, deformed character with extraordinary power, played by Peter Dinklage as Winston Gooze. After an accidental dip in toxic waste, Winston transforms into The Toxic Avenger. This contemporary remake is deeply rooted in environmental issues, with Winston battling against the malevolent forces of greed and corruption to rescue his son, friends, and hometown.
Though this tale stands independently, its essence is unquestionably linked to the source. Rest assured, longtime and fresh Troma enthusiasts, as expected from the studio, the movie carries an R rating due to its graphic violence and gore.
Personally, as a gamer, I’ve never been one for remakes. I prefer the raw, DIY approach of guerrilla filmmaking that I’ve always admired. Those movies were made without a second thought, purely because the creators loved it. Some might not be masterpieces, but the ones that are fun are truly something special. When films are too polished, they can feel detached from the audience. They crave the grit and dirt, the feeling of being submerged in something a bit toxic, just like those Troma films did.
