As a huge fan of horror movies and Sabrina Carpenter‘s music, I was absolutely thrilled to see her latest video! The way she seamlessly blended iconic moments from classic films like “The Addams Family,” “Psycho,” “Halloween Ends,” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” was nothing short of genius. It’s clear that Sabrina has a deep appreciation for the genre, and her willingness to immerse herself in these roles shows just how dedicated she is to her craft.
The long-awaited album “Short n’ Sweet” by Sabrina Carpenter has arrived, and it coincides with the release, Carpenter unveiled one of her best music videos so far. This video is for the lead track “Taste,” and it stars Jenna Ortega from Wednesday in a humorous and frequently gruesome battle that includes shotguns, fences, knives, fire, and much more. The video also acknowledges various other popular titles as it goes along, and we’re here to discuss the major references and inspirations, such as Death Becomes Her, Kill Bill, and others. Let’s begin with one of the most significant influences for the video, which just so happens to be one of Carpenter’s favorite movies.
Death Becomes Her
Right from the start, it’s obvious that this movie draws considerable influence from the 1992 dark comedy Death Becomes Her, starring Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep. The plot revolves around these two women trying to outdo each other in a quest for love, which becomes challenging when they both become immortal due to a magical potion. This unique predicament leads to some scenes that are hard to forget.
In the video, there’s a scene where Carpenter appears after being severely hurt in the hospital, and there’s a large opening in her abdomen visible – this mirrors one of the movie’s famous moments when Hawn exclaims “I have a hole in my stomach”, and you can indeed see right through it. The kiss in the video also echoes a well-known line from the original film about a kiss.
Ginger Snaps
In the end, it’s Ortega’s action of hurling Carpenter out of a second-story window that results in her landing on a white picket fence, getting impaled. Notably, after this incident, Carpenter retaliates by making an offensive gesture towards Ortega. This scene is reminiscent of the 2000 movie “Ginger Snaps,” where a similar fate befalls the characters, and the final act involves a symbolic gesture.
Kill Bill
In the hospital scene, Carpenter is meant to receive medical attention, but her chance to heal is cut short when Ortega appears, dressed as a nurse who bears a striking resemblance to someone from the past. This is because Ortega dons an eye patch similar to Daryl Hannah’s in Kill Bill Vol. 1. Ortega seems perfectly suited for such a role, as she grabs a defibrillator and repeatedly shocks Carpenter with it. The typography used throughout the video also pays tribute to Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.
The Addams Family Values
After a harrowing ordeal involving a fence, a defibrillator, and being engulfed in flames, Carpenter eventually recovers and heads towards Ortega’s mansion to confront him. She dons a white feather boa reminiscent of the character Debbie Jelinsky, played by Joan Cusack in The Addams Family Values, adding a touch of villainous flair to her appearance. Her blonde hair style also mirrors that of Belinsky from the movie, and it’s not hard to imagine Jelinsky admiring Carpenter’s determination to push the boundaries in this battle.
Psycho
As Carpenter enters the house, she reenacts a chilling scene from Psycho, drawing back the shower curtain and lunging at Ortega with a knife. However, Ortega is on guard and swiftly counters with her own blade, severing Carpenter’s arm in the process. The struggle continues as they descend the stairs, but despite losing an arm, Carpenter refuses to give up, fighting back valiantly. In the end, Ortega emerges victorious.
Halloween Ends
As a horror enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the chilling homage to Psycho in this particular scene. It seems to be connected to Halloween Ends, where Rohan Campbell, portraying Corey Cunningham, finds himself in a terrifying situation. In this instance, he shares a tense moment with Ortega in a shower setting – only for her to suddenly amputate Carpenter’s arm, causing a bloodbath.
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Following a lengthy conflict between them, the battle shifts towards the swimming pool as Ortega pulls out a chainsaw. Later, Ortega uses this chainsaw to stab Carpenter and shoves her into the pool. The contrast between the brutal violence and the peaceful daylight setting is reminiscent of Texas Ch chainsaw Massacre, although the presence of the chainsaw already hints at this.
