Massive Raid on Pokemon Store Uncovers $1.3 Million of Narcotics

As someone who grew up with the Pokemon craze sweeping through playgrounds and classrooms alike, it never crossed my mind that this beloved franchise would be associated with such a dark reality as drug trafficking. I remember spending countless hours trading cards and strategizing battles, not worrying about the potential danger lurking behind those colorful characters.

It turns out that the Pokemon brand has become quite profitable across various sectors, encompassing films, television, gaming, and more. However, a recent event in Hong Kong is causing quite a stir among fans, as a Pokemon store was found to be involved in an enormous drug raid. The South China Morning Post reported this incident, where over a million dollars worth of illicit substances were discovered.

The report verifies that an operation took place in Hong Kong on August 19, specifically at a shop specializing in Pokemon trading cards and merchandise. This establishment became the target of an operation when officers noticed a 28-year-old individual exiting a warehouse nearby. Upon investigating, they discovered that he was carrying approximately five kilos of meth. Consequently, to apprehend the suspect, authorities were compelled to execute a raid on the Pokemon store.

It was there a hidden storage facility as discovered, and more than $1.3 million USD of commercial meth was found. By the time the raid was done, 16 kilograms of meth was found. According to police, the drugs confiscated were not being peddled to or by Pokemon fans who frequented the shop. Current investigations suggest the Pokemon shop was a simple front, and drug trafficking was kept behind closed doors.

“Storing such a large quantity of narcotics in a place where teenagers and children can visit is irresponsible and disgraceful behavior that also heightens the possible risk of teenagers and children mistakenly encountering illegal drugs,” Liong Chun-Hin, the Hong Kong Narcotics Bureau Inspector, shared with the public in light of this recent arrest.

The ongoing probe into the drug bust indicates it could be linked to a broader trafficking network in the region. Meanwhile, Pokemon enthusiasts can continue enjoying their hobby and participating in tournaments without concern, as this incident appears to be an isolated case. However, such headlines do add a unique twist to the phrase “gotta catch ’em all”.
