Naruto Creator Reveals His Biggest Regret for Sakura

As a long-time Naruto fan who has followed the series since its early days, it’s always fascinating to delve deeper into the creator’s thoughts and intentions behind the characters we’ve grown to love. Masashi Kishimoto’s recent admission about regretting not developing Sakura Haruno’s bond with her parents is a poignant reminder of how even the greatest storytellers can sometimes miss opportunities for character development.

For many years, Naruto has been a popular series, and it continues to thrive today due to the efforts of creator Masashi Kishimoto. With artist Mikio Ikemoto assisting, Kishimoto is carrying on Naruto’s legacy with a follow-up series focusing on the Hidden Leaf’s future generation. Naturally, our original cast, including Team 7, are still around. Recently, Kishimoto has acknowledged one lingering regret about Sakura Haruno from the initial storyline.

In a recent conversation with Ikemoto, Kishimoto mentioned Team 7, and during this discussion, the Naruto series creator expressed regret for not exploring Sakura’s family background more thoroughly.

As stated by Kishimoto, he expresses feelings of remorse about not delving deeper into Sakura’s relationship with her parents, a aspect he did explore for characters like Sasuke and Naruto given their intricate family backgrounds. Regrettably, the complexity of Sakura’s home life was not fully explored, and this is something Kishimoto now acknowledges as a missed opportunity.

Indeed, we have some information regarding Sakura’s parents. They are none other than Kizashi and Mebuki, characters who were not depicted in the Naruto manga, but were finally introduced by Kishimoto in “Road to Ninja: Naruto the Movie.” In this film, an alternate timeline portrayed Sakura’s parents, tragically killed in battle when the Nine-Tailed Fox attacked the Hidden Leaf. A preceding anime episode titled “Road to Sakura” introduced these characters as they are known in the canon version of the series. Mebuki was depicted as a serious yet loving mother, while Kizashi was full of enthusiasm. Although Kishimoto did not delve into the family dynamics extensively in the manga, he managed to provide Sakura with some family time through the anime.

There’s still a chance that Kishimoto could introduce Sakura’s parents into the manga of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Although he might not be drawing the sequel, Kishimoto is the one who writes the story for it. The series frequently focuses on Sarada Uchiha, daughter of Sakura and Sasuke. Since Sarada has grandparents named Mebuki and Kizashi, it would be nice if we get to see them meet Sarada in the future.
