Avowed Runs at 30FPS on Xbox Series X

As a seasoned gamer with decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve learned to appreciate the nuances that separate a good game from a great one. When it comes to performance, I’m usually a 60fps kind of guy – it just feels smoother and more responsive. But after hearing Obsidian Entertainment’s art director Matt Hansen explain their decision to stick with a 30fps target for Avowed, I find myself intrigued rather than disappointed.

As a fervent enthusiast eagerly anticipating the release of Avowed next year, I can confirm that the game will operate smoothly at 30 frames per second (fps) on Xbox Series X. This revelation comes directly from the developers at Obsidian Entertainment, as articulated by art director Matt Hansen during an episode of the Iron Lords podcast. In this discussion, Hansen expressed his conviction that single-player games don’t inherently require a 60fps frame rate.

According to Hansen, we aim to maintain a minimum of 30 frames per second in our game. While 60 frames might be ideal in some cases, especially for multiplayer games, for a single-player, first-person game like ours, it’s not strictly necessary. By sacrificing that extra frame rate, we can make the game more visually appealing with better effects, lighting, and overall graphics. We made this decision early on and are pleased with the outcome. The game runs smoothly given its visual density, which was our aim from the start.

As February 18th, the official release date of Avowed, approaches, we’ll gain a clearer understanding of its gameplay performance. Some media professionals have had early hands-on experiences with the game at Gamescom this week, but Xbox has not yet made it accessible to the general public. Here’s hoping for more chances to explore the game before its launch, so fans can gather more information and determine if the performance is an issue of concern.

Over the years, Obsidian Entertainment has emerged as one of Xbox’s most dependable development studios, creating critically acclaimed titles like Grounded and Pentiment. Surprisingly, these games have also appeared on other consoles this year, such as PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. This year, Xbox seems to be focusing more on making its games available on multiple platforms, and this week brought the news that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle from Bethesda will arrive on PS5 next year. It’s speculated that Avowed could follow suit at a later date, but no official announcements have been made yet.
