Star Wars: Keanu Reeves Was Reportedly Original Choice for The Acolyte Role

As a gamer with a soft spot for the Star Wars universe and an insatiable curiosity for behind-the-scenes trivia, I can’t help but feel a pang of regret that Keanu Reeves didn’t get to wield a lightsaber in The Acolyte. If you remember, he was already a Jedi in the Matrix trilogy!

Following a less-than-enthusiastic response from viewers, Lucasfilm decided to pull the plug on “The Acolyte” after just one season on Disney+. In this series, I was part of an impressive cast, with Lee Jung-jae (known for his work in “Squid Game”) portraying the elusive Jedi Master Sol. Interestingly enough, it seems that I wasn’t their initial pick for the role; a recent whisper from a Hollywood source hints that Lucasfilm had initially attempted to secure Keanu Reeves for the part instead.

According to Jeff Sneider’s recent update, despite a previous report suggesting otherwise, Reeves didn’t shoot any scenes for The Acolyte. However, it seems there were discussions about him taking on the role initially given to Lee Jung-jae from Squid Game. Unfortunately, the character played by Lee was written out at the end of Season 1.

According to the source, Lionsgate refused to accommodate changes in Reeves’ shooting schedule for the upcoming John Wick spinoff, Ballerina, which is a key project for their studio.

According to Sneider, though studio insiders claim Reeves wasn’t formally offered the role, he was keenly interested in appearing on the show. Instead, it cast his Matrix co-star Carrie-Anne Moss. Interestingly, there’s a possibility that Reeves could join the Star Wars universe eventually, as Lucasfilm holds him in high regard and has taken note of his interest.

Instead of terminating The Acolyte because of negative reviews or fan backlash, Lucasfilm opted to cancel it primarily due to insufficient audience viewership.

What Is Star Wars: The Acolyte About?

During the era of The High Republic, Star Wars: The Acolyte presents an intriguing exploration of a series of enigmatic crimes. This investigation puts a Jedi master and his former apprentice in fierce competition to expose the truth. As they delve deeper into the case, their path grows increasingly ominous as they encounter darkness beyond anything they had previously conceived.

As a long-time fan of science fiction and action-packed series, I was thrilled to learn that “Star Wars: The Acolyte” premiered on Disney+ on June 4th. With a talented cast like Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss, this new addition to the Star Wars universe promises an exciting journey.
