Indiana Jones and the Great Circle “Could Never be a Shooter,” Developer Says

MachineGames, known for their high-octane first-person shooter combat in the revamped “Wolfenstein” series, is branching out with a unique gaming experience for their upcoming title, “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.” While it shares the first-person perspective, this game will offer a distinctly different play style. As one would anticipate from an Indiana Jones adventure, combat will have a focus on close-quarter, hand-to-hand encounters. The developers stress that this approach is most fitting for the nature of this action-adventure game.

In an interview with PC Gamer, design director Jens Andersson explained that as an Indiana Jones game, The Great Circle wouldn’t fit the mold of a shooter. Instead, the emphasis on close-quarters combat aligns better with the character’s style.

Andersson remarked, “Indiana Jones isn’t known for being a gunman, is he? He usually avoids resorting to guns in difficult situations. Therefore, it’s unlikely he’d ever be a shooter. However, close combat, that fits him perfectly.”

It’s important to mention that a large part of MachineGames’ development team was previously involved in creating Starbreeze Studios’ 2004 game, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, which like their current project, is a first-person game emphasizing melee combat. However, Andersson points out that the fistfights in Indiana Jones and the Great Circles are described as “more freeform”, to capture the humor inherent in the Indiana Jones series.

“Although he’s frequently involved in conflicts, it doesn’t reflect his true character as he’s not a natural fighter. This paradox makes him an extraordinary yet accidental hero,” he explained. “To replicate this dynamic in the gameplay, let’s create a player experience that feels surprising and humorous. How can we convey this whimsical essence? One idea could be designing a character who stumbles into conflicts but manages to triumph against all odds.”

In contrast to Riddick’s hand-to-hand combat style, The Great Circle’s fights are more chaotically semi-structured, with numerous objects scattered around the environment that can be seized and used as improvised weapons – like pots, pans, or anything else you might find and use to crack against someone’s head.

In addition, it was disclosed by the creative director, Axel Torvenius, that players will have the option to break banjos over opponents’ heads as well.

Notably, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will incorporate expansive zones enriched by immersive simulation aspects, and also include stealth strategies for social interactions. Learn more about it from this link.

The adventure-packed game, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, is set to release for the Xbox Series X/S and PC on December 9, with a PS5 version hitting stores in spring 2025.
