Paramount to Produce Devilina Movie Based on Obscure Comics Character

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast with memories of flipping through the pages of Atlas Comics stacked high in my childhood home, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming feature film adaptation of Devilina! With a rich history dating back to the golden age of comics and a diverse portfolio that spans numerous genres, it’s like a dream come true to see these characters finally getting their time in the spotlight.

Paramount Pictures is working on a live-action movie version of the comic book character Devilina, owned by producer Steven Paul and published by Atlas Comics. Screenwriter Rebecca Webb, known for her work on Echo, will pen the script. The production will be handled by Steven Paul, Scott Karol from SP Media Group, and Jason Goodman, a relative of Marvel Comics co-founder Martin Goodman’s wife and cousin to Stan Lee. Atlas Comics boasts a wide range of characters spanning various genres.

Five years following Paul’s acquisition of the Atlas comic book portfolio, which includes characters like Devilina, he aimed to establish a shared universe. This was initially planned shortly after purchasing the rights, but the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic halted Hollywood productions, temporarily halting the start of the Atlas universe.

“Paul mentioned that right from the start, Atlas Comics’ extensive collection of characters and tales were designed as a connected universe. He emphasized that ‘Devilina’ serves as an entry point, and they are committed to preserving this original vision of Atlas, aiming to let readers deeply engage with these intriguing characters and captivating stories,” says Paul.

According to Jon Gonda, Executive Vice President of Production at Paramount Pictures’ Motion Picture Group, Atlas has a rich history dating back to the golden age of comics, hosting some of the most remarkable comic book creators ever. There’s an abundance of beloved characters and countless stories waiting to be shared.

Previously in comics, an attempt to introduce Atlas characters onto a page was based on a shared universe concept, where veteran writer (and now publisher of Ahoy Comics) Tom Peyer penned the stories. The 2011 series featured the alliance of superheroes Grim Ghost, Phoenix, and Wulf the Barbarian with the tough-as-nails police officer Mike Lomax.

If you aren’t acquainted with Atlas Comics, that’s alright since it had a brief run, lasting less than a year. The focus was on developing and debuting numerous new characters (many of whom made just a single appearance). Martin Goodman established this short-lived publishing house in 1974.

The storyline for “Devilina” goes as follows: A naive young woman travels to New York City in pursuit of her roots, uncovering the shocking truth that she is Satan’s sister. Meanwhile, her twin brother has been secretly influencing her life, and a detective is hot on the trail of a string of murders connected to her. (Reported first by Deadline)

Conor O’Farrell, director of development at SP Media Group, is developing the project.
