Sicily Yacht Tragedy: Boat Captain Part of Manslaughter Investigation

As an ardent follower of maritime news, I find myself deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic sinking of the Bayesian superyacht off the coast of Sicily. The loss of life, particularly that of six passengers and the ship’s chef, is a heart-wrenching reminder of the unpredictable nature of the sea.

Next steps are being taken following the yacht sinking in Sicily.

Investigations are ongoing regarding the captain of the luxury yacht named Bayesian, specifically James Cutfield, following a tragic incident where seven individuals out of the total 22 onboard – six passengers and the ship’s chef – lost their lives after the vessel was hit by a waterspout and subsequently sank. This confirmation came from prosecutors during a press conference held on August 24th.

Giovanni Rizzuti, the lawyer representing the New Zealander, has confirmed to NBC News that both multiple manslaughter and shipwreck investigations have been initiated against his client. Furthermore, it was verified that Cutfield will be summoned for a second interrogation by prosecutors in Sicily on August 27th.

TopMob News has reached out to Rizzuti for comment but has not yet heard back.

While it’s true that he is under investigation in Italy, this doesn’t automatically mean he will be charged. As NBC News points out, being investigated doesn’t equate to guilt and charges aren’t guaranteed. Rather, prior to conducting an autopsy, formal notices must first be issued to those under scrutiny by the authorities.

Officials have not made a decision on whether they’ll investigate any other team members along with Cutfield, but it remains uncertain at this time.

The announcement about the ongoing investigation followed, as it was later confirmed that all six passengers who went missing from the Bayesian had sadly passed away, with the final body being discovered on August 23rd.

In this incident, seven individuals have been previously identified: Mike Lynch, a renowned British tech entrepreneur, along with his daughter Hannah; Jonathan Bloomer, who serves as Chairman at Morgan Stanley International, and his wife Judy; Chris Morvillo, a lawyer, and his spouse Neda. The body of the ship’s cook, Recaldo Thomas, was discovered soon after the event.

In the incident involving the overturning of the Bayesian, Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was one of the fifteen passengers on board who were successfully saved by a nearby ship. Subsequently, they were safely transported to land by the Coast Guard.

The incident took place on August 19th, as a sudden and powerful storm swept in from the coast of Sicily. Previously, the head of Sicily’s Civil Protection Agency, Salvatore Cocina, speculated that it might have been a waterborne tornado—or a waterspout—that caused the sinking of the 180-foot ship. He emphasized that unfortunately, the yacht was caught in an unfortunate circumstance, being at the wrong place and time.

Among the 15 passengers who miraculously endured, one of them was Charlotte Golunski. Accompanying her were her partner, James Emsley, and their 12-month-old daughter, Sophie. In the past, she has recounted the harrowing instant when the ship they were on was struck by the tempest.

Speaking to the Italian newspaper La Repubblica on August 20th, as reported by BBC, she shared her harrowing experience: “For just two moments, I couldn’t find my daughter in the sea. In a flash, I embraced her amidst the tumultuous waves.” She added, “Everything was pitch-black. I could barely keep my eyes open in the water. I cried out for help, but all I heard were the desperate screams of others around me.”
