As a gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and a deep affection for animated sitcoms, I must say, this news about “Everybody Still Hates Chris” has me all worked up like Julius Rock when he finds out his paycheck doesn’t cover the family’s expenses!
15 years since “Everybody Hates Chris,” the sitcom based on Chris Rock’s childhood, concluded its four-season stint on The CW, Comedy Central has announced that an adult animated series – a revival of Chris Rock-narrated “Everybody Hates Chris” featuring Tyler James Williams in the lead role – will debut on September 25th at 10pm ET/PT. Rock is serving as executive producer and will voice “Adult Chris,” who narrates the story of his teenage self, voiced by Tim Johnson Jr. from “Saturday” and “Fright Krewe,” taking over Williams’ role, as he recounts growing up as a skinny nerd in a working-class family in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn during the late 1980s.
Additionally, the network unveiled a sneak peek image, shown further down, which showcases an animation style reminiscent of Star Trek: Lower Decks (both shows are brought to life by CBS Eye Animation Productions and animated by Titmouse).
In the remake, Terry Crews and Tichina Arnold resume their characters as Chris’ parents. His father, Julius, is a hardworking giant with frugality ingrained in him, having grown up extremely poor. He maintains two jobs to sustain the family, while on his days off he takes on an additional job. Chris’ mother, Rochelle, is intelligent, strong-willed, and nurturing, yet prone to quick temperament, particularly when it comes to her children. She has zero tolerance for nonsense, often quitting jobs faster than most people change them over a lifetime.
The ensemble features Ozioma Akagha from “Teen Titans Go!” as the spirited younger sibling of Chris named Tonya. She possesses an angelic face yet harbors a demonic spirit, maintaining a cordial relationship with her middle brother Drew while always eager to land Chris in trouble. Terrence Little Gardenhigh lends his voice to Chris’s youngest brother, the family’s pride and joy, who embodies Black Excellence: he is handsome, athletic, a charmer with women, towering over and outcooling his older brother Chris. Lastly, Gunnar Sizemore, known for “Kung Fu Panda,” voices Greg, Chris’s sole school friend who is consumed by an obsession with girls, status, and was raised by a single father.
In this project, Chris Rock serves as an executive producer through his company, Chris Rock Enterprises. Joining him are showrunner Sanjay Shah (from Central Park), Ali LeRoi who co-created Everybody Hates Chris, Michael Rotenberg from Beavis and Butt-Head, and Dave Becky from Duncanville, all under the banner of 3 Arts Entertainment. Meanwhile, in terms of animation, Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, and Ben Kalina, known for their work on Star Trek: Lower Decks, Big Mouth, Royal Crackers, and Venture Bros.: Radiant Is the Blood of the Baboon Heart respectively, executive produce for Titmouse, a studio renowned for its work on Big Mouth, Animaniacs, Beavis and Butt-Head revivals.
The show titled “Everybody Still Hates Chris” debuts on Comedy Central on September 25th, and you can also stream it on Paramount+.
