As a seasoned crime drama enthusiast who has witnessed countless twists and turns, I must say that Sherwood season 2 has certainly raised the stakes in episode 2. The triple murder at the heart of this week’s installment left me utterly speechless and craving for more.

In Sherwood’s second season 2 episode, the situation was extremely critical. The Bottomleys had been relocated to a secure location in Skegness, but close behind them were Ann (Monica Dolan) and Roy (Stephen Dillane), who were tracking them down with vengeance in mind. Their son had been killed, which led them to seek retribution.
However, no anticipation could have fully prepared us for the chilling triple homicide that concluded the episode, causing viewers’ jaws to drop in shock and raising numerous intriguing questions.
At the beginning of the episode, the Bransons planned to involve young Ronan (Bill Jones) in identifying the Bottomleys. However, when they learned that Ronan wasn’t alone when he saw Nicky Branson’s murder, his mother Daphne (Lorraine Ashbourne) became determined to discover who else was present at the time of the crime.
Unanticipated by her, the exchange of texts with the unknown number found on her son’s phone would ultimately result in her encountering her grown-up daughter Rachel (played by Christine Bottomley).
To spare Ronan from identifying the Bottomleys, Daphne persuaded Rachel to take on the task, as she had spotted Stephie (Bethany Asher) in a picture that Ryan (Oliver Huntingdon) made her view prior to shooting Nicky.
And while the mother-daughter reunion was complicated and emotional, the Sherwood episode really notched up a gear in the tension stakes in the last 20 minutes or so. Crammed into a car, Ann and Roy sat in the front while Daphne and Rachel waited to see how the day in Skegness would pan out.
In the heart of town, Roy suggested Daphne and Rachel pop into the local tavern since it was noon, mentioning that if the Bottomleys weren’t around, they might be there instead. Interestingly enough, Pam (Sharlene Whyte), Denis (David Harewood) and Stephie hadn’t planned on leaving home that day, but they were taking advantage of the town atmosphere and happened to be having lunch at the very same pub.
At once, Rachel identifies them without a second thought. As Daphne hastily attempts to signal danger, Ann unexpectedly enters the scene and recognizes them on her own. To verify if they were the ones she was seeking, Ann casually calls out “Pam.” True enough, Pam responds and turns to face them.
Daphne disguises her trip to the restroom as an excuse to send a warning to the Bottomleys. She sends a text from her own phone to their secret backup device, which Rory had given her. However, due to its low battery, it won’t stay powered for very long. Before returning to Ann and Rachel, she secretly places the burner phone in Pam’s coat pocket, hoping she’ll check her messages soon.
However, upon their return to the secure location, Pam discovers the phone is uncharged. She reaches out to Harry (Michael Balogun), but it’s Marcus (Jorden Myrie) who answers and assures her to stay put, as he arranges for some officers to monitor the situation instead.
In the backyard, Denis arranges for Stephie to search the beach with the metal detector. He spots a neighbor using a riding lawnmower and inquires if he could borrow it to cut their own grass. It turns out that the same neighbor has a charger for phones too, so Denis can recharge his mysterious device.
En route to the Bottomley’s safe house, Roy gets a message from his inside contact, who goes by the name of Marcus. This individual alerts Roy that he must pick up the phone as well, following a tip-off from Pam.
However, as the episode reached its climax, Denis revved up the lawnmower, masking the sounds of Roy forcing his way in. In her bedroom, Pam encountered Roy and was fatally shot after he said “For Nicky.” Meanwhile, Kyre stepped outside unaware of Roy’s actions and ended up shooting Denis, who was still operating the mower.
Meanwhile, as others exit from behind, the camera focuses on Stephie alone, still employing a metal detector on the shoreline, seemingly oblivious to the recent events – though this is merely our assumption.
As Kyre heads towards his van, Roy, Ann, Daphne, and Rachel depart in their separate vehicle. Alone at his van now, he begins to organize his belongings in the back. However, a shocking turn of events unfolds as Stephie, unbeknownst to him, stabs him with garden shears from behind. She quickly shuts the rear doors and abandons Kyre inside the van, condemning him to a tragic end.
In the closing moments, with Harry found at the now-crime-scene hideout and Stephie weeping, will she admit to the murder? Additionally, how does Branson’s dual act of vengeance fit into the ongoing struggles between the rival gangs?
Let’s move forward to episode 3, although it’s important to note that it won’t feature the touching acting of Whyte and Harewood anymore.
