Jenna Ortega Reveals She Auditioned for Denis Villeneuve's Dune

As a seasoned gamer and movie enthusiast with over two decades of screen time under my belt, I can’t help but feel a pang of “what if” when I think about Jenna Ortega’s audition for Denis Villeneuve’s live-action Dune. Being a fan of the franchise since its inception, and having admired Villeneuve’s work, I was rooting for her to snag the role of Chani. Alas, it was not meant to be, as Zendaya ultimately took on the part. But hey, who knows? Maybe one day we’ll see Ortega in a different sandworm-filled adventure!

Jenna Ortega has become known for her roles in popular franchises such as “The Addams Family” spinoff “Wednesday”, “Scream”, and the upcoming “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice”. However, a recent interview with BuzzFeed reveals that she also auditioned for a role in Denis Villeneuve’s live-action “Dune” movies. While it is unclear what specific role Ortega was up for, she hints that it could have been for the part of Chani, which ultimately went to Zendaya.

“When I was around fifteen years old, I attempted to secure a role in the movie ‘Dune’. This project was particularly exciting for me due to my admiration for both the film and its creator, Denis Villeneuve, who is one of my favorite directors. At that time, the casting process was confidential.”

Will There Be a Dune 3?

After the premiere of Dune: Part Two this year, viewers are eager to learn if and how the series will continue in cinemas. Director Villeneuve hinted that a script for the third film, titled Dune: Messiah, has been written, and he is working on creating the optimal adaptation from the original source. Fans have suggested that Dune: Messiah might be unveiled on December 18, 2026, though this date is currently reserved by Warner Bros. for an upcoming film’s debut.

In a recent interview, Villeneuve stated that he’s currently developing four unique screenplays. He’s certain that one of them will be “Dune: Messiah,” but he’s undecided about its exact position in the lineup, whether it will come next or slightly afterward. His goal in this project is to preserve and honor Frank Herbert’s spirit as much as possible, emphasizing that the true essence of “Dune” unfolds with “Dune: Messiah.”
