As a gamer with a knack for binge-watching shows and a soft spot for Emilia Clarke, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and curiosity about her latest project, “Ponies.” With her impressive resume that includes Game of Thrones and the MCU, it seems like she’s making a habit out of reinventing herself.
Following several years playing Daenerys Targaryen on the popular HBO series “Game of Thrones”, actress Emilia Clarke has now secured her newest TV role. On a recent Monday, news broke that Clarke will not only star in but also executive produce a new live-action espionage thriller titled Ponies. Peacock recently gave this project a direct-to-series order. This latest television part for Clarke follows earlier announcements this year stating she’ll portray Mallory in Amazon Prime Video’s adaptation of the Image Comics’ “Criminal” series.
Ponies is a collaborative effort between Susanna Fogel (notably known for The Flight Attendant and The Spy Who Dumped Me) and David Iserson (renowned for his work on Mr. Robot and New Girl). Fogel takes on the roles of executive producer, director, and co-writer in this series, while Iserson contributes as a co-writer and showrunner.
What Is Ponies About?
The story “Ponies” takes place in Moscow, 1977. Two individuals, known as ‘PONIES’ or ‘persons of no interest’ within intelligence circles, work inconspicuously as secretaries at the American Embassy. However, their lives take a dramatic turn when their spouses are mysteriously killed in the Soviet Union. As a result, they are recruited by the CIA. Bea, played by Emilia Clarke, is a highly educated woman with a Russian-speaking background, having been born to Soviet immigrants. Her counterpart, Twila, hails from a small town and is both rough around the edges and fearless. Together, they embark on a mission to expose a far-reaching Cold War conspiracy and unravel the mystery behind their husbands’ untimely deaths.
The executive team behind the show “Ponies” includes Jessica Rhoades, who has also worked on series like “Black Mirror”, “Station Eleven”, and “Dirty John”. Additionally, Alison Mo Massey and Katherine Bridle serve in roles as co-executive producers.
Will Emilia Clarke Return to the MCU?
In summer 2023, Jodie Clarke made an appearance on the Marvel Studios series, Secret Invasion, which premiered on Disney+. Her character, Skrull G’iah, concluded the show by gaining a multitude of superheroes’ powers, leading to speculation about her potential return to the franchise. However, as director Ali Selim pointed out, it wasn’t certain that G’iah would reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), so his focus was on wrapping up her personal narrative.
As a fan, I can’t help but express my thoughts about the Olivia Colman/Emilia Clarke, Sonya/G’iah moment at the end of the series – it certainly leaves room for something intriguing down the line. However, even if these characters never reappear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I believe that their resolution brings a beautiful conclusion to the story, and I feel content with where things stand now.
