Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke to star in new spy thriller PONIES

As a movie enthusiast with a keen eye for quality storytelling and a soft spot for strong female leads, I am thrilled to hear about Emilia Clarke taking the lead in PONIES, an upcoming Cold War spy thriller set on Peacock. Her versatility, proven by her impressive resume ranging from Game of Thrones to rom-coms like Me Before You and Last Christmas, makes her a perfect fit for this complex character.

Actress Emilia Clarke is set to headline the ensemble of the upcoming Cold War-set spy thriller titled ‘PONIES’. This series, directed by the creator of ‘The Flight Attendant’, will stream on American platform Peacock.

The story unfolds in 1970s Moscow, with Bea (Clarke), who is a product of Soviet Union immigrants raised in the U.S., working at the American Embassy and leveraging her proficiency in Russian.

Initially, she and her colleague Twila, yet to be cast, were considered unimportant individuals by the U.S. government. However, following the tragic deaths of their husbands in the USSR, they were assigned roles as CIA operatives, tasked with investigating the mysterious circumstances surrounding these fatalities.

It’s been confirmed that David Iserson, writer for Mr. Robot, will serve as the showrunner for the upcoming project. Additionally, Susanna Fogel, known for her work on The Flight Attendant, has been confirmed as a co-creator, co-writer, and executive producer alongside David Iserson.

According to Deadline, NBC-Universal, who own Peacock, had long expressed interest in the project, but it wasn’t until Clarke officially joined that they gave a green light for a full season.

Previously renowned for his role in Game of Thrones, this actor is also recognized for romantic movies such as Me Before You and Last Christmas, along with disappointing installments in the Terminator, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Marvel’s Secret Invasion franchises.

Led by a robust creative crew, spectators are eagerly anticipating that PONIES surpasses its previous three iterations. Additionally, Clark’s upcoming projects – “Criminal” on Prime Video and “The Twits” on Netflix – are eagerly awaited as well.

A major co-starring role is up for grabs in the form of Twila, described as a “small-town girl” who is “abrasive” and “fearless”, but there’s no word on who will be playing that character at the time of writing.

Similarly, it’s uncertain where one can access PONIES in the UK, as Peacock is no longer an option for British viewers, who previously could subscribe to it through Sky.

It’s plausible that the original content of Peacock, like the Twisted Metal adaptation for PlayStation, which has been acquired by rival streaming platforms such as Paramount Plus, could also end up being showcased prominently on other platforms.

PONIES is coming soon to Peacock.
