As a gamer who grew up with Sega consoles and countless hours spent mastering the art of running through loops as Sonic, the hype for the third installment of the live-action movie has been building like an Eggman-sized balloon ready to burst! The first trailer has finally dropped, and it’s a rollercoaster ride of nostalgia mixed with eager anticipation.
At long last, the initial trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has been unveiled! Following a hint about its release a short while ago, Paramount has ultimately shared a sneak peek of what’s to come when the film debuts later on this year. The trailer gives us a peek at Sonic, along with other recurring characters, but what fans have been eagerly anticipating is none other than Shadow the Hedgehog. In the first trailer, Shadow steals the show, and we now know for certain that Keanu Reeves will be lending his voice to this character!

Besides giving a glimpse of certain scenes, today’s trailer for the new movie also subtly reveals some aspects of the overall plot. Shadow first appeared in “Sonic Adventure 2,” and we’ve been aware that the film’s narrative would draw inspiration from this game. Since the initial Sonic movies have created a distinct universe compared to these games, it will be intriguing to observe how closely the movie aligns with its source material while also offering unique differences.
Shadow first appeared in the Sonic Cinematic Universe in a stinger at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Shadow was not voiced in that scene, leaving many fans guessing who would end up cast in the role. For a while, rumors suggested that Hayden Christensen might play Shadow, but those rumors were debunked when reports about Reeves playing the role began to circulate. After all this time, it’s nice to finally have things confirmed, and hear how Reeves will portray the Sega favorite!
In the upcoming film “Sonic 3,” it’s evident that Shadow will play a significant role as one of the main adversaries. However, another familiar face making a comeback is Jim Carrey reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik. Although it appeared Dr. Robotnik met his end in “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” the trailer suggests ways he managed to elude this demise. In the video games, Shadow is a synthetic being crafted by Gerald, Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather, and it seems this backstory will remain consistent in the new movie as well.
Today’s sneak peek into Sonic the Hedgehog 3 provides us with plenty of fresh insights, yet leaves us pondering over certain aspects. Clarity will come once the movie hits the big screens on December 20th.
