As a long-time fan of Sonic and his entourage, I must say that the latest trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has truly outdone itself! The return of Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik was already a delight, but to discover he’s playing not one, but two characters – mind-blowing!
Today, the long-awaited trailer for “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” has been released, and it’s now confirmed that Keanu Reeves is the voice actor for Shadow the Hedgehog. Previous cast members like Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey are back as Sonic the Hedgehog, Knuckles, and Tails. Interestingly, we also see Jim Carrey reprise his role as Dr. Robotnik after a spell of doubt about whether he would continue playing this character or any other movie roles in the future.
Besides Jim Carrey reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik alongside Lee Majdoub’s Agent Stone aiding him in regaining his classic appearance, it appears that Carrey will take on not one but two roles in the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 film. Towards the end of the trailer, another character emerges: Gerald Robotnik. This character is Dr. Robotnik’s grandfather, and while the trailer doesn’t explicitly confirm it, Carrey’s mannerisms and voice hint that he might be portraying both characters in the movie.

However, this revelation marks a significant shift from the Sonic and Shadow stories we’re familiar with. As time went on, the world grew wary of Gerald due to the increasingly risky nature of his research, ultimately leading to his execution. This is quite a somber turn of events in a series generally known for its cheerful tone.
It’s intriguing that Gerald is alive and interacting not only with his grandson, Dr. Robotnik, but also potentially other characters like Shadow the Hedgehog. Since this is merely a teaser, Sonic the Hedgehog enthusiasts have multiple opportunities to uncover more information before Sonic the Hedgehog 3 drops on December 20th.
