As a devoted fan of Lizzo, I can’t help but feel a mix of admiration and concern for the extraordinary journey she’s been on. Her unwavering commitment to her artistry, self-care, and authenticity is truly inspiring. Yet, it’s heartbreaking to see her facing such relentless criticism and negativity, especially when she’s doing nothing more than being herself.
Lizzo is feeling good as hell about making music on her own timeline.
In a heartfelt Instagram video shared on August 25th, I, the overjoyed fan, stepped into the spotlight, braving the pouring rain in a chic black swimsuit. The caption read: “I’m embarking on a gap year, safeguarding my tranquility.”
In July 2022, the Grammy-winning artist unveiled her fourth studio album titled “Special“. Besides contributing a song named “Pink” for the upcoming 2023 Barbie film, she hasn’t disclosed any new music since.
Lizzo’s declaration emerges during a challenging period, with the “Truth Hurts” performer having encountered a lawsuit from three ex-dancers last year.
In August 2023, three ex-dancers filed a lawsuit against Melissa Viviane Jefferson, better known as Lizzo, accusing her of fostering a hostile work environment and body shaming them. Later, Lizzo refuted these allegations in an Instagram post, describing the dancers’ accounts as “exaggerated stories” and stating, “At times, I must make tough choices, but it’s never my intention to make anyone feel uncomfortable or undervalued as a crucial team member.”
Several months had passed when Lizzo disclosed her intention to step away, following the backlash she received from fans due to the controversy surrounding the ongoing lawsuit.
She expressed on Instagram on March 29 that she feels weary of being pulled along by everyone around her, both personally and online. What she truly desires is to create music, bring joy to others, and contribute positively to the world. However, she is beginning to feel as though the world doesn’t want or need her presence.
“Lizzo went on to say that she’s repeatedly confronted with falsehoods about her for popularity and attention. She also mentioned feeling like a target, often used as the punchline in jokes due to her appearance. Moreover, she expressed frustration over people judging her character without knowing her and disregarding her reputation.”
Noting she “didn’t sign up for this s–t,” Lizzo concluded at the time, “I QUIT.”
Later on, when fans speculated that Lizzo might be ending her music career due to her initial statement, she subsequently made it clear what she truly meant about her comments.
She expressed in a video posted on Instagram in April, “I won’t give up the source of my happiness, which is creating music and connecting with others.” She continued, “I understand I’m not the only one feeling that inner critic, that seemingly overwhelming negative voice, drowning out the positive.”
