As a lifestyle expert with a deep empathy for individuals navigating profound loss, I can only imagine the pain Julianne Hough must have felt when she lost her beloved dogs Lexi and Harley. Losing a pet is never easy, but the sudden and tragic circumstances surrounding their demise must have made it all the more unbearable.
Despite the years that have passed, Julianne Hough still feels this loss deeply.
After several years since the co-host of “Dancing with the Stars” revealed the tragic loss of her dogs Lexi (aged 11) and Harley (aged 8) in 2019, Julianne has finally disclosed for the first time the manner in which these beloved pets met their untimely end.
She recalled that she had requested a separation, which was in reference to her divorce from Brooks Laich. Approximately ten days later, her beloved pets fell victim to coyotes.
She went on to say, “I awoke prior to my phone ringing, and instinctively I knew something was wrong. Picking up the phone, my then-assistant was in a state of alarm.”
Reflecting on past experiences, she acknowledged that although coyotes had never ventured into her yard when she had gates, she found herself appreciative of those moments in retrospect.
Julianne shared with host Jamie Kern Lima, “I’m so thankful they went together.” She added, “Firstly, I appreciate how swift it all happened and that we retrieved their bodies. However, at that moment, it felt to me as if the inviolability of unconditional love was being dismantled.”
In Julianne’s words, “My dogs were like my children, and I had them for a total of 11 years, with eight years being particularly special. They meant the world to me.”
But while the loss of her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels was a devastating blow, a few years later, Julianne began to heal when she welcomed a new pup into her life, Sunny, in 2023.
Amid the heart-wrenching turmoil of my life, Lexi and Harley’s untimely deaths occurred during a time when I was already grappling with a breakup from Brooks, making the loss even more agonizing. To add to this sorrow, their passing coincided with our decision to end our professional partnership, as well as the launch of my new venture, Kinrgy.
“Julianna recalled, choking back tears, ‘I was so far from being in sync.’ She was on the brink of starting a company focused on self-discovery and personal freedom, yet her relationship was ending, causing her to request a separation. Her partners seemed to be leaving her life – her dogs who symbolized unconditional love and security were gone, leaving her questioning, ‘What am I doing? Am I about to destroy my own life?'”
But while the loss of her Cavalier King Charles Spaniels was a devastating blow, a few years later, Julianne began to heal when she welcomed a new pup into her life, Sunny, in 2023.
Reflecting on her new puppy’s first birthday, the star of Safe Haven contemplated how Sunny’s arrival had brightened every aspect of her life.
In Julianne’s July 6 post, she said, “Sunny, you’ve filled my life with affection and actual sunshine.” She added, “I can’t recall a time before you. Lexi & Harley would have adored you and played with you every day. I believe they sent you to me, when I was prepared to reopen my heart and love again – you helped me heal, sweetheart.”
