Rebel Ridge Director Jeremy Saulnier Reveals Which Movies Most Inspired the Netflix Film

As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in gritty, action-packed narratives, I can confidently say that I am eagerly anticipating the release of Jeremy Saulnier‘s latest masterpiece, “Rebel Ridge.” With influences as diverse as Sylvester Stallone’s iconic “First Blood” and contemporary classics like “Mississippi Burning,” this film promises to deliver a unique blend of suspense, action, and intrigue.

Through movies like “Blue Ruin”, “Green Room”, and “Hold the Dark”, filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier has earned recognition not just for trying to redefine popular movie genres, but for adding his distinctive touch to these ideas while still paying tribute to the films that inspired him. Just as he did with his previous work, Saulnier drew inspiration from the past when creating his latest film “Rebel Ridge”. One of his main influences for this film was a Sylvester Stallone classic, which eventually spawned a franchise that significantly departed from its original installment. “Rebel Ridge” is scheduled to be available on Netflix starting September 6th.

According to Saulnier, “First Blood” was his primary influence in terms of origins, not “Rambo: First Blood,” as it’s known now. He clarified this to ComicBook. However, any movies from the ’80s and ’90s with a distinct texture were also significant for him, such as “Thunderheart” and its final scene featuring Plymouth K-cars driving across the tundra, raising dust. Other films like “Mississippi Burning” and “Michael Clayton” served as references too. Essentially, it was a mix of various elements. We aimed to forge our own path, but there were certainly similarities.

In Netflix’s upcoming film titled “Terry Richmond,” portrayed by Aaron Pierre, we find Terry entering the small town of Shelby Springs with a straightforward objective – bailing out his cousin from an imminent threat. However, a twist of fate occurs when Terry’s life savings are confiscated unjustly by the law enforcement. This forces him to confront the local police chief, Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson), and his formidable officers.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the cast of “Rebel Ridge” includes me (Aaron Pierre), Don Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, David Denman, Emory Cohen, Steve Zissis, Zsane Jhe, Dana Lee, and James Cromwell. Can’t wait to dive into this exciting production!

This movie is the second original Netflix production by Saulnier, following his release of “Hold the Dark” in 2018. Apart from this, he briefly dipped into the “True Detective” universe during Season 3, but scheduling issues limited his involvement to directing only two episodes of that season.

Rebel Ridge is set to land on Netflix on September 6th.
