The cost of the PlayStation 5 is going up for consumers in Japan, as Sony has decided to increase its price once more. This adjustment in pricing, however, will not affect other regions such as Europe, China, Canada, Australia, and so on, which were also affected by Sony’s global economic environment changes back in 2022.
As a gamer, I just learned from the Japanese PlayStation Blog that Sony is bumping up the price of the PS5 by approximately $90 USD for both standard and digital editions. This means the standard PS5 will now cost me around 79,980 Yen, while the digital one will set me back 72,980 Yen. Apparently, this decision is due to a tough global economic situation that’s affecting their business, as they mentioned the challenging external environment. So far, it seems like only Japan is experiencing this price increase; other regions haven’t been announced yet.
Approaching the fourth year since the launch of the PS5, it’s somewhat unexpected that its price keeps increasing instead of decreasing. So far in the PS5 era, there hasn’t been any reduction in the hardware cost anywhere in the world. This is a significant shift from Sony’s past behavior with PlayStation consoles; for instance, both the PS3 and PS4 experienced price reductions within their initial two years on sale.
If there’s a reduction in the price of the PS5 happening soon, it might be around the same time as the release of the PS5 Pro. Although Sony hasn’t officially announced a more advanced version of the PS5 yet, many rumors indicate that it could debut before the end of 2024. If these reports are correct, we might hear about this new console in the upcoming weeks.
