As a seasoned gamer who’s dabbled in my fair share of crime-solving games, I must say I’m intrigued by the upcoming Peacock series, “Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy.” The blend of real-life horror and fictional storytelling has always fascinated me.
In the annals of American crime history, few names send a chill down one’s spine quite like John Wayne Gacy. Known for his horrific acts that claimed the lives of numerous young men during the ’70s, what truly chills me to the bone is not just his heinous deeds but the fact that this monster would don the costume of “Pogo the Clown” on weekends, participating in community events while concealing a secret as dark as the night. The upcoming Peacock series titled “Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy” is being developed, drawing inspiration from a previously released docuseries. Notable actors like Gabriel Luna and James Badge Dale have joined the cast, with Michael Chernus portraying the notorious killer himself.
Titled “Devil In Disguise: John Wayne Gacy”, this series delves into the deceptive facets of the notorious serial killer’s life. It unravels the chilling narrative of Gacy, a man who managed to hide his heinous crimes for years due to his charisma, humor, and seemingly ordinary lifestyle. He was a respected community member, holding a decent job, and even volunteered as an entertainer for sick children, dressed as a clown. The series uncovers the tragic tales of his predominantly gay victims, sheds light on the pain, remorse, and trauma experienced by their families and acquaintances, and exposes the systemic flaws, overlooked chances, and deeply rooted biases that allowed his reign of terror to continue.
The new additions to the cast are as follows:
- Gabriel Luna (The Last of Us, Terminator: Dark Fate) as Detective Rafael Tovar
- James Badge Dale (Savant, 1923) as Chief of Detectives Joe Kozenczak
- Michael Angarano (Oppenheimer, This Is Us) as Sam Amirante
- Chris Sullivan (This Is Us, Mercy) as Lead Prosecutor Bill Kunkle
- Marin Ireland (The Irishman, The Umbrella Academy) as Elizabeth Piest
In this creative collaboration, Littleton Road Production’s Patrick Macmanus (known for his work on ‘Dr. Death’ and ‘The Girl From Plainville’) assumes the roles of showrunner, writer, and executive producer. He works alongside fellow executive producer Kelly Funke from Littleton Road Productions. Additionally, Noah Oppenheim (‘The Maze Runner’, ‘Jackie’), Liz Cole (‘John Wayne Gacy: Devil in Disguise’, ‘The Thing About Pam’) from NBC News Studios, Ashley Michel Hoban and Ahmadu Garba (both previously involved with ‘Dr. Death’ and ‘Halo’) are also part of the production team.
Michael Chernus expressed his feelings as both thrilled and humbled upon learning about the project. He appreciates the direction the writers are taking with this series, which highlights the victims, their families, and those who brought John Wayne Gacy to justice. While Gacy is a perpetrator of heinous crimes, Chernus is glad that the focus won’t be solely on him in the series. It’s heart-wrenching for him to consider what these young victims might have accomplished if not for the system’s tragic failure. He trusts in the power of storytelling and hopes that by sharing this story sensitively, we can contribute to preventing similar tragedies from recurring in the future.
