As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest update on The Witcher 4, or as CD Projekt Red prefers to call it, Polaris, has got me thoroughly excited! Being an avid fan of the series since its inception, I’ve been eagerly waiting for this next chapter in the saga.
This week, CD Projekt Red provided an update on their upcoming project, codenamed “Polaris,” as part of their first-half 2024 earnings report. Known to fans as the potential fourth installment in The Witcher series, this new title promises a fresh saga for enthusiasts to explore. Despite its unconfirmed title, we’ve got the latest news on its development.
As per CD Projekt Red, the upcoming Witcher game is transitioning from its pre-development phase to full production. It has been in this initial stage since its announcement, but now, with the completion of the pre-production phase, we can expect it to start actual development shortly.
In the same discussion regarding the status of ‘The Witcher 4’, Michał Nowakowski, who co-heads CD Projekt, also touched upon ‘Project Orion’, the upcoming Cyberpunk sequel following ‘Cyberpunk 2077’, which has moved into its complete production phase earlier in 2021.
“Progress continues on the Polaris project, with its development team almost reaching a significant landmark that signifies the conclusion of the pre-production phase, according to Nowakowski. The initial half of this year has been quite hectic for our Boston studio as they prepare the foundation for Project Orion – an upcoming game taking place in the Cyberpunk universe.”
Indeed, neither Polaris nor Project Orion have set release dates yet, as they are still quite far off. However, it’s important to note that the development of the Cyberpunk game is more advanced at this point compared to The Witcher, given that Polaris is only now transitioning out of pre-production.
In a recent video, CD Projekt’s Chief Financial Officer, Piotr Nielubowicz, reflected on the current status of the upcoming Witcher game, mirroring the statements expressed in their official press release.
According to Nielubowicz, our Studio saw a great deal of activity in the first half of 2024, particularly on the production side. The Polaris team, responsible for the next installment in the Witcher series, has made significant strides. This progress will allow us to complete pre-production soon and transition into the full-fledged production phase for this project.
Although the upcoming Witcher game is set to introduce a fresh narrative and potentially a different main character, it has been hinted that Geralt of Rivia will make an appearance in some form within the game, even if the specifics of his role remain undisclosed for now.
