As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I’ve witnessed the rise and fall of countless game franchises. Yet, few have managed to captivate me like the gritty, neon-lit world of Night City did in Cyberpunk 2077. So, hearing about a sequel has me as giddy as a schoolboy on Christmas morning.
CD Projekt Red has given an update on the unannounced follow-up to ‘Cyberpunk 2077’, often referred to as ‘Cyberpunk 2077 2’ online. The developers, based in Poland, are now moving into full production of ‘The Witcher 4’ after a prolonged pre-production phase. Fortunately, CD Projekt Red also has a second studio located in Boston that is dedicated to working on the sequel to ‘Cyberpunk 2077’.
As reported by CD Projekt Red, the follow-up to their 2020 open-world RPG is currently being planned out, which essentially means it’s in an early development phase. Since the game hasn’t moved into full production yet, we can’t predict exactly when the sequel will be released. However, it seems certain that it won’t arrive for a few years at least, and possibly even several years from now.
Given that the top-tier expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 titled Phantom Liberty was just launched less than a year ago, it’s not really shocking to find out that the next game in the series is still in its initial stages of creation. Since we’re discussing this, it’s likely that the follow-up will be designed for the PS6 and the next generation Xbox, or maybe even cross-gen if development progresses swiftly and efficiently.
Given the challenges Cyberpunk 2077 faced as a cross-gen title, it’s quite likely that CD Projekt Red might forego a second scenario if possible. However, if they are still early in the next console generation, they may not have a choice due to insufficient user base on the current consoles. Consequently, we don’t anticipate that CD Projekt Red intends to release this sequel close to the launch of the next-generation consoles.

Should CD Projekt Red introduce significant changes or stick to the familiar formula? What are your expectations?
