Square Enix Says More Games are Coming to Xbox After Final Fantasy 14

As a long-time gamer who has been waiting patiently for the arrival of Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox, I can say that Phil Spencer’s persistence paid off in spades! The fact that Square Enix is now moving towards a multiplatform strategy is music to my ears (or should I say, controller vibrations?).

It wasn’t until March 2024 that Final Fantasy XIV finally made its way onto Xbox, a process that required significant effort by Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox. For years, he had expressed his desire to bring this MMORPG to the platform, but it wasn’t until then that it became a reality. It appears that Spencer’s diligence was not without reward, as this could pave the way for more games from Square Enix. In a recent interview with Eurogamer, Final Fantasy XIV’s director Naoki Yoshida elaborated on the challenges involved, primarily the small user base of Xbox in the Japanese market.

At Square Enix, we’ve been making some shifts in our strategy. Now, we’re aiming to distribute our video games across multiple platforms, so that a greater number of gamers can enjoy our titles. As Yoshida shared with Eurogamer, this includes plans for more Square Enix games to be available on Xbox. With Final Fantasy XIV serving as our foundation, we’re excited about expanding our presence on this platform, and there will indeed be more of our games coming to Xbox. So, keep an eye out for exciting developments in the future!

In recent times, Square Enix has been heavily investing in PlayStation, with numerous games launching exclusively on this platform. However, as hinted by Yoshida, things are evolving at the publisher. Back in May, Square Enix declared their intention to adopt a multiplatform approach, meaning more games will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox. Although no specific games have been announced for Xbox yet, it’s highly likely that games like Final Fantasy XVI will eventually appear there, post its PC release. The possibility of Final Fantasy VII Remake and Rebirth also shifting to other platforms is high, given their initial exclusive status on PlayStation. If these games do move platforms, it could pave the way for a third game in the trilogy, and it’s not unreasonable to expect this could happen simultaneously with the release of Final Fantasy XVI on PC.

Regrettably, we don’t have an estimated timeline for when our cross-platform approach will be implemented. Fingers crossed that Xbox gamers will soon experience the advantages of our strengthened partnership, leading to a significant increase in Square Enix games available on their preferred platforms!
