As a seasoned gamer with over three decades of immersion in the intricate world of film and pop culture, I can confidently say that Ripley, the indomitable Ellen Ripley, played by the legendary Sigourney Weaver, holds a special place in my heart. Her journey across the Alien franchise has been nothing short of epic, and her character’s development is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring appeal of strong female protagonists.
For over two decades, Sigourney Weaver played Ellen Ripley in four different Alien movies. It’s been nearly 30 years since fans last saw her in Alien: Resurrection. Some viewers consider Ripley essential for a good Alien tale, but the financial and critical success of Alien: Romulus suggests the series has made a comeback. Fans are curious if this revival means Ripley might appear again in another movie. Although Weaver hints it’s not out of the question that she’ll play Ripley again, she also believes Ripley deserves some peace and relaxation.
In simpler terms, Weaver shared with Deadline that she often feels as though Ripley, the character she played, is not too distant from her, yet nothing in any script has demanded her to reprise the role. Consequently, Ripley resides in a different realm, temporarily shielded from the Alien threat. She seldom ponders over this possibility, but acknowledges it isn’t entirely implausible. Moreover, many talented filmmakers draw inspiration from their material. As for another Ripley movie, she doesn’t actively contemplate its necessity, but if an opportunity arises, she might reconsider. However, she is currently engaged in other projects; Ripley has deserved a break.
After the movie “Resurrection”, the Alien series went on with two films that combined elements from the Predator series. In 2011, the original director of Alien, Ridley Scott, revisited the franchise and produced Prometheus, a prequel that had loose links to the existing mythology.
After the release of Prometheus, which garnered a mix of responses from both audiences and critics, it created a complex period for dedicated Alien fans in the subsequent years. Meanwhile, Sigourney Weaver was working with director Neill Blomkamp initially on his film Chappie and later on his Oats Studios series of short films. This collaboration led Blomkamp to share concept art online for a proposed Alien 5, a sequel that would have continued from the events of Aliens, reintroducing Weaver’s character, Ripley, as well as Michael Biehn’s Hicks.
Enthusiasts looked forward to the hints Blomkamp shared about his proposed film, Alien 5, but later, Ridley Scott took over the franchise again to produce the sequel to Prometheus, titled Alien: Covenant. There has been discussion among those in the know about whether Blomkamp’s movie managed to gain significant traction with 20th Century Fox.
