Fantastic Four: Marvel Fans Celebrate "Comic-Accurate" The Thing

As a seasoned gamer and comic book enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit, the new set photos of Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing from Fantastic Four: First Steps have left me utterly thrilled! The level of detail and accuracy in this portrayal is simply unparalleled and has me yearning for the days when comic book adaptations truly captured the essence of their source material.

On Wednesdays, Marvel enthusiasts received an exciting surprise as leaked set photos from the upcoming movie “Fantastic Four: First Steps” emerged, offering a first glimpse of the highly anticipated character – Ben Grimm/The Thing. Portrayed by actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who is known for his role in “The Bear,” these new images give a sneak peek at the cherished orange-skinned team member that could possibly be the most comic-accurate live-action representation yet, causing quite a buzz among fans.

In the photos — and subsequent video — we get a glimpse of what appears to be Moss-Bachrach being assisted into a The Thing mask. The actor is also in what appears to be full costume, with a Fantastic Four suit and even rocky orange hands that are briefly visible as well. While it remains unclear if this is how the character is going to ultimately appear in the film — Moss-Bachrach has previously indicated that his performance may be mostly motion capture, indicating that there will be use of CGI — this look certainly seems to be a strong indicator that Fantastic Four: First Steps is trying to be as comic-accurate as possible. It’s that possibility that has fans online excited.

“Looks like a comic book has come alive!!!” @WAVHistheMOC wrote. In response, @whtbllnking gave two thumbs up and echoed The Thing’s famous phrase: “Time for some smashing action! It’s punching time!!!”

Other individuals took a more practical approach in their responses, acknowledging that they appreciate the current appearance, but also realizing that computer-generated imagery (CGI) will undoubtedly play a role in the final output. In simpler terms, as expressed by @oneofmanyryans, “While CG modifications might be unavoidable like Thanos, I genuinely enjoy the design for The Thing’s face!” They also hope that the CGI design will remain similar to the current version.

MattBCTucker posted: “The Thing appears quite traditional.” He implies that they might add Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) over the physical mask. However, he also appreciates that it’s a real-life effect on set too. The scale seems fitting as well.

What is Fantastic Four: First Steps About?

Currently, specifics about “Fantastic Four: First Steps” are scarce, but director Matt Shakman has hinted that this movie, which takes place in a retro-futuristic 1960s setting, will not retell the origin story of Marvel’s First Family.

Shakman stated that they opted against delving into an origin story from the outset. To differentiate our version, we’re skipping the part where they ascend and undergo transformation; instead, our narrative starts at the climax of the first act. Essentially, we chose to begin this tale fresh, starting from a completely new point following that pivotal moment.

The upcoming film titled “Fantastic Four: First Steps” boasts an impressive cast. Pedro Pascal, famously known for his role in “The Last of Us“, takes on Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic. Vanessa Kirby, a notable face from “The Crown“, portrays Sue Storm/Invisible Woman. Ebon Moss-Bachrach, recognized from “The Bear“, steps into the role of Ben Grimm/The Thing. Joseph Quinn, hailing from “Stranger Things“, will play Johnny Storm/Human Torch. Julia Garner is set to appear as Shalla-Bal/Silver Surfer, while Ralph Ineson portrays Galactus. Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, and Natasha Lyonne are slated to appear in undisclosed roles. Matt Shakman, who directed “WandaVision“, will helm the movie’s direction.

Fantastic Four: First Steps has a theatrical release date of July 25, 2025.
