Who is Celebrimbor in The Rings of Power? Charles Edwards character explained

As a diehard fan of Middle-earth and its rich tapestry of characters, I am eagerly awaiting the return of The Rings of Power for its second season. The trailers have only heightened my anticipation, with their promise of high-stakes drama, epic battles, and, of course, more rings!

With the arrival of The Rings of Power season 2 on our screens, the previews give us a clear idea about the exciting journey ahead.

Epic high-stakes action, breathtaking fight scenes, awe-inspiring special effects, and of course, numerous circuits – that’s the gist!

The rings are skillfully crafted by the gifted blacksmith, Celebrimbor – a highly significant and impactful Elven figure in Middle-earth.

Towards the close of season 1, Celebrimbor fashioned the first three rings known as Nenya, Narya, and Vilya without Sauron’s control. His intention was to slow down time in Middle-earth for the Elves and preserve their diminishing radiance at its peak.

In the previews for the second season, it appears that Celebrimbor will play a more pivotal role – his actions becoming intertwined with Annatar, who is in fact Sauron undercover, as he continues to manufacture additional Rings of Power.

Minor spoilers ahead.

Who is Celebrimbor in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power?

In my film critic’s perspective, much like the characters in Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the on-screen Celebrimbor has been subtly reimagined from his original Tolkien character – he is older and wiser, carrying a wealth of experience. Moreover, he bears the prestigious title of Lord of Eregion, further enhancing his stature within the storyline.

In both the series and the literature, Celebrimbor hails from an illustrious lineage of Elven blacksmiths, with Fëanor, the foremost among them, being the most distinguished member of this line.

Fëanor crafted the Silmarils, three gems created using the essence of the two trees of Valinor.

In simple terms, the Silmarils are considered the most remarkable masterpieces made by the Elves. Therefore, it can be inferred that Celebrimbor carries a significant inheritance, a fact underscored by his character as he communicates this to Elrond during season 1.

What will Celebrimbor be doing in season 2 of The Rings of Power?

It is understood that Sauron, disguised as Annatar, a representative of the Valar, will return to the city of Eregion with the intention of teaching the blacksmiths, specifically Celebrimbor, the skills of forging rings.

However, based on what the trailers reveal, it seems that Celebrimbor’s alliance with Sauron won’t turn out favorably for him, as his typical serious and noble demeanor begins to crumble under the burden of his choices, and the oppressive influence exerted by the Dark Lord.

From what we know about the Second Age, clues from the trailer, and a song title on Bear McCreary’s newly-released Season 2 score, it appears that the Siege of Eregion is imminent.

Celebrimbor will be in the thick of that action, and looks to be a major player in season 2.

What is his relationship to Sauron?

Towards the close of season 1, there emerged an intriguing relationship between Celebrimbor and the character disguised as Halbrand, who was actually Sauron at that point.

Partly, their extraordinary camaraderie, evidently strong based on their interactions, is a significant factor. This has been observed by many during their appearances together in the Season 2 promotional tours.

Essentially, it’s due to the intriguing depth of Celebrimbor’s personality and mental state, as well as Sauron’s ability and intent to influence him.

Due to his ancestral background and the hardships the Elves in Middle-earth are experiencing, Halbrand/Annatar/Sauron may propose an opportunity for him to surpass the legendary status of his grandfather, Fëanor, by becoming a genuine hero who saves the Elvish race.

In a conversation with The Telegraph, actor Edwards discussed the intricate relationship between his character and the one portrayed by Vickers.

Celebrimbor aspires to act virtuously, yet craves recognition and immortality. He’s self-centered and easily influenced by Sauron’s manipulative tactics. The situation is filled with psychological maneuvering, often involving deceit and confusion.

Who plays Celebrimbor in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power?

In the series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, the character Celebrimbor is played by the British actor Charles Edwards.

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve always admired Jim Broadbent’s illustrious journey through the world of acting. From gracing our screens in iconic series like Downton Abbey, The Crown, and Colditz, to commanding the stage in plays such as Best of Enemies – where his mesmerizing portrayal of Gore Vidal landed him a Best Actor nomination at the Laurence Olivier Awards. Truly an artist whose talent knows no bounds!

Prior to Edwards’s portrayal, many fans envisioned Celebrimbor as a traditional fantasy Elf, such as Legolas working at a forge. However, Edwards intended to challenge this perception.

In an interview with The Telegraph, Edwards explained that fans initially saw his character as a “muscular man with a hammer.” However, he admitted that when he read this description online, he thought, “I’m not sure that’s the way I plan to portray him.”
