As a long-time X-Men fan who has weathered countless storms and battles alongside our mutant heroes, I must say that the latest development in Cyclops‘ storyline left me quite concerned. The tension between Cyclops and Agent Lundqvist, coupled with his mysterious illness, is reminiscent of the days when Cyclops was struggling to come to terms with his own destiny under the weight of the Phoenix Force.
In the current state of affairs, the future for the X-Men seems uncertain. However, one of their prominent figures faces a decidedly ominous path ahead. The X-Men, now living outside their self-governed island Krakoa, have returned to a world where they are once more marginalized and targeted due to their differences. Yet, this doesn’t deter them from their mission against discrimination and wrongdoing; Cyclops is spearheading a new X-Men team during the X-Men: From the Ashes epoch.

In issue #3 of X-Men, the talented crew of Jed MacKay, Ryan Stegman, JP Mayer & Livesay, Marte Gracia, and VC’s Clayton Cowles take the reins. The narrative revolves around the X-Men managing the chaos caused by a newly activated mutant whose powers instigate citywide panic. This triggers the government to deploy troops to their new base, the Factory, located in Alaska. A significant aspect of this issue is the encounter between Cyclops and a government agent named Lundqvist. This confrontation, held within an Alaskan diner, adds a dramatic twist to the storyline.
“Cyclops Standoff with the U.S. Government” suits X-Men #3 well, as Cyclops warns Agent Lundqvist that his X-Men will persist in their mission, with Agent Lundqvist and O*N*E conceding them the right to do so. Cyclops implies a potential confrontation between Scott Summers and the U.S. is imminent but not desired by the government, and then departs to the diner restroom. It’s during this time that we discover something is seriously amiss with Cyclops.
Cyclops is hiding a dark secret from the X-Men
Cyclops walks into the bathroom, removes his coat, and seems to struggle with his breathing. It looks like he might be unwell. Leaning over the sink, we notice that Cyclops is perspiring heavily and repeating “Breathe… Breathe…” This could possibly be a recurrence of the Legacy Virus, a condition exclusive to mutants, or perhaps something else has transpired in the time between the end of Krakoa era and X-Men: From the Ashes.
As a dedicated gamer diving deeper into the X-Men universe, I can’t help but wonder when we’ll unravel the mysteries that lie ahead. Here’s hoping Cyclops and his squad don’t pay a heavy price as these secrets are revealed one by one.
