As someone who grew up watching WWE, Vince McMahon was an integral part of my childhood. His charisma, his vision, and his larger-than-life personality made him a true icon in the world of professional wrestling. However, the recent allegations against him have been shocking and disheartening to say the least.
Over the past few years, WWE has moved away from having a significant association with Vince McMahon. During his last couple of years in the limelight, McMahon, who used to be the chairman of the company, lost control as an initial investigation into sexual misconduct led to his retirement and then return, eventually resulting in his resignation. Currently, McMahon is being investigated for accusations of sexual abuse and sex trafficking. His resignation took place in January, shortly after WWE announced a major deal with Netflix – set to bring the popular show WWE Monday Night Raw to the streaming service starting in January 2025. Journalists have probed figures like WWE’s Chief Content Officer Paul “Triple H” Levesque, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes, and John Cena about McMahon at press conferences, but all WWE personnel and personalities have chosen to focus on the company’s future instead of its past.
Netflix Announces “Mr. McMahon” Docuseries
Netflix appears to be tackling the Vince McMahon variable head on.
According to social media updates, Netflix is set to debut a six-part documentary series titled “Mr. McMahon” on September 25th. This series offers an in-depth look at the life story of the WWE’s contentious founder. The executive producers behind this project are Chris Smith, known for his work on “Tiger King“, and Bill Simmons from The Ringer. Interviews with McMahon before his resignation, as well as discussions with his family, significant figures from wrestling history, and journalists who exposed the accusations that eventually led to McMahon stepping down, are included in this documentary series.
On September 25th, the Netflix documentary series “Mr. McMahon” – detailing the ascendancy and descent of the contentious founder of WWE – will be available. In January 2023, Simmons stated that Vince hasn’t openly addressed the accusations and NDAs he signed, along with related matters. He added that he’s currently producing a large-scale documentary series on Vince, emphasizing that it’s a dynamic project.
For approximately two years, the development of Mr. McMahon’s project has been ongoing, with Netflix spearheading the idea as early as Summer 2022. The path to its debut, however, has been fraught with challenges and potential cancellations, particularly following Netflix’s acquisition of the broadcast rights for Monday Night Raw from WWE. Recently, when asked about Netflix’s stance on the recent accusations against McMahon, Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria declined to comment.
“Well, Vince McMahon, he’s gone,” Bajaria said. “He’s not there. He’s gone.”
On September 25th, Mr. McMahon debuts on Netflix. Starting from January 2025, WWE Monday Night Raw will make its initial broadcast on the streaming platform, marking the beginning of John Cena’s retirement tour.
